I encountered a YouTube video about converting color to B&W using gradient maps. Like most such videos it was terrible, but after 6 or 7 hours I finally unravelled what it was all about. In fact, the technique itself is extremely powerful, so much so that I may explain it on my AnEyeForTexas blog soon. After trying 5 alternative approaches to converting this image, a B&W layer placed under a B&W gradient map was undoubtedly the the most flexible and provided the best results. So here is the result.
I think this is my most popular photo, I've seen it on tumblr several times and I honestly don't really like it that much but thanks everyone, your comments and favourites really mean a lot! :)
Another simple side of the road snap from the Eden Valley on the road from Culgaith to Skirwith. Its the field that I love - the tree and and the emerging fleeced in the background just adds a wee bit of balance. Taken with the Nikon Df and the old but lovely Nikon 180mm 2.8 AF-n

For a solid 10 days, Albany had about 0% humidity, no wind, and picture-perfect gradient skies every night. I had to get down to the docks and get a shot of the crystal-clear reflection on the Hudson river before windy November rolled in.
I based this composition on Robert Stone's work: www.flickr.com/photos/bobstone/
He has some absolutely great shots of the Albany skyline.
Horgabost beach on Harris in the Outer Hebrides is always a delight. the views are superb. However if you wander along looking at your feet the sand patterns can be stunning too. Here a blue-yellow gradient has been added to enhance the colours.
Super amei!
Beijos, fiquem com Deus!

Not to be confused with a vector illustration, this is actually a photograph with minimal corrections (dust spot removal, no color enhancements). The crisp clear sky during sunset in the Great Smoky Mountains gave a perfect red-orange gradient on the horizon with just enough atmospheric perspective in the foothills. Nature's work of art!
I found this lovely juvenile raft spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus) happily enjoying some sort of insect for lunch while hiding between the yet unopenend flowers of a lily.
Adoro gradiente pra fazer a fila andar =)

This photo is taken about 10 minutes before the Sombrero on Mount Rainier shot using a 10.5mm f2.8 on a DX sensor (D7000), making it more like a 15mm. The clouds were still coalescing toward the mountain and there's still an abundance of blue light. The yellow sunlight is only hitting the higher clouds at this stage. I darkened the foreground in editing to diminish the impact of some distractingly brighter objects.
