A bad day, but a good day.

"Nobody is immune to a nationwide evil unless he is unshakably convinced of the danger of his own character being tainted by the same evil."

[Jung]

I am sure everyone of you, who reads this will remember exactly where you were, on that terrible day in2001,

I remember where I was and who I was with, we headed for the nearest Bar, it had a big screen, and I remember the look of incomprehension on every face, the silence and even the tears, as we realized, this was not some hollywood disaster movie, but real life, with real human beings dying.

for 102 minutes we watched stunned, horror struck as the two towers fell, and the whole world saw the face of true evil, the evil that men do, how could we make sense of this senseless and cowardly attack, on a city that I loved, as many of us do, it is part of our subconsious, the star of all our favorite movies, New York. The epicenter of all things weird and wonderful. I stood at ground zero three years ago, and was stunned by the enormity of the loss, all those brave Firemen and all those lost souls, never to be at peace,

I talked with the local Firemen and was genuinely touched by their loss, their friends, brothers, fathers who gave their very lives to try to help. I went to the local restaurant on the corner, and fell in love with the tough talking sassy puertorican waitress with the greatest Brooklyn accent ever, who gave me a harrowing no bullshit account of that day. each Fireman, volunteer, construction worker and many more left their helmets behind in that little restaurant and I found that to be a stunning simple tribute to the human spirit.

The flamebursts, and the plumes of smoke are seared into our memories worldwide, no event in history became known throughout the world so quickly or so dramatically. the twin Towers rose 1360 feet in the center of one of the most densely populated cities, and then they were gone. What unspeakable evil Bastards could do this? I spoke with men who saw the bodies and heard them fall, and even now they find it hard to talk about it, and who would blame them. I still feel incredible anger about this and do not even want to contemplate how the bereaved families and American population must feel. I love New York and commend its people for having true heroes

At Epiphany all water becomes holy, even the water in falling rain or the water in frozen form (as in snow). Snow surrounds the bas-relief of St. Michael the Archangel slaying Satan (aka Lucifer) and lower demons (or fallen angels) with his sword. The bas-relief is just beneath the South choir’s dome of The Exaltation of the Holy Cross church.

The archangel is represented as anthropomorphic, flying with wings and a halo around his head. This old bas-relief is very rare, since in Greek Orthodox churches Angels’ and Saints’ representations are almost always painted (as either icons or wall-paintings, aka frescoes), instead of being carved.

The church was once the katholikon (main church) of an Abbey (aka “Monastery”). It is a vaulted three-aisled basilica of a singular architectural style all of its own, measuring 72.8 × 43.3 ft (22.2 × 13.2 m without apses and choirs). The church is defined by its thirteen domes and still stands within a picturesque fir-trees’ forest at an altitude (elevation) of 3,609 ft (1,100 m). It was built in c.1770 or 1792. Severe damages were caused by the Nazi Germans during the occupation in WWII. The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is dependent on St. Stephen’s monastery (Meteora).

The church is located between two villages—Dholianá and Kraniá. Both villages are in the greater area of Aspropótamos (Greek for “White River,” toponym of river Acheloos) in Trikala county, Greece.

Im Nebel~~~

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!

Einsam ist jeder Busch und Stein,

Kein Baum sieht den anderen,

Jeder ist allein.

Voll von Freunden war mir die Welt,

Als noch mein Leben Licht war,

Nun, da der Nebel fällt,

Ist keiner mehr sichtbar.

Wahrlich, keiner ist weise,

Der nicht das Dunkle kennt,

Das unentrinnbar und leise

Von allen ihn trennt.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!

Leben ist einsam sein.

Kein Mensch kennt den anderen,

Jeder ist allein.

Posing a couple of masks I picked up at my local Halloween shop in honor of the holiday.

Strobist info:

Two Nikon SB900 speedlights with snoots placed camera right, one on each subject at a distance of about 5', in Manual mode and fired @ 1/16 power. A 2.5-second exposure allowed for ambient window fill light camera right.

Speedlights triggered by three PocketWizard PlusX's.

Lens: Nikkor 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED DX @ 56mm.

Had some extra time today so I was playing around experimenting with some different ideas. What you see here represents about 2% of all the shots I took exploring different ideas. All there rest were, eh, blah.... But, hey, something that I like came out of it and that makes all the effort worth it (even if nothing good comes out of the time, at least I know what DOESN'T work. ;) )

Original settings: 50mm AF-S at f/6.3. 1/10 sec. Handheld. ISO-400. What you see here is as close as I could get it to how it looked through my eyes (minus the vignetting).

One stage before, countless souls have taken these now empty seats. As the window turns its empty eye to the world and erect the guardian slayer stands, with brandished sword, so the rooftops of vanished worlds and forgotten paradigms shines, abandoned, in the light of the late afternoon Sun.

There's a red couch with blue curtains, at the Brussels film museum. In this realm of projected silhouettes, it seems appropriate to imagine the silhouette of the dragon slayer, suspended in mid-air, against a backdrop of surreal rooftops, trees and chimneys. There are faint whispers of a light, burning in a fireplace. Somehow. Someday. Somewhere.

I have been working on completing the “foundation” series, that I started almost two years ago. It feels important to me to close this chapter and move on to different things. There is one more picture that I want to make and then the series will be complete. Read more on my blog: nickiupstairs.com/dichotomy

Two souls merging into one person

Each person has two parts of them: one being the distinct personality which is who they believe they are, and the other a contrastingly concealed part which they might not even know exists within them. One part glimmering in purest light, the other drifting in and out of darkness, the same way good and evil coexist with each other. I like to think that reason is why we can't only be kind, or cruel, all the time - there must be a mix of both, because there are two of us in one body. I may hate the darker part of myself, because it is unkind, heartless, and cold - but without it, the better, brighter half, can not develop from the mistakes that I make.

outtakes + behind the scenes on youtube ll facebook ll if you want to ask anything

...nothing exists without its opposite. The battle between good and evil - it's that sunny days vs. dark and dreary thing again - the knowledge that if dragons exist, there must be a way to defeat them. We're living a fairytale - not all princesses and magic pumpkins but poison apples and dark corners too.

can't get enough of the red backdrop

Candy Apple: "Did you know we are both dresses alike!"

Cream Puff" "What I'm and angel and your a devil?"

Candy Apple: "Yes but remember the Devil disguises himself as an angel of light!!!"

Cream Puff: " Shhhh he's heard you, can't you see him?"

Candy Apple: " No worries he knows we've got the truth now!!!!!"

Idiom: Speak of the devil - the person your talking about appears at that moment!
