Heading home. Book club tonight was great. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is, let's be honest, a weird book. Some people loved it, some people didn't like it, but we could all see each other's point of view, so the discussion was lively and engaging.

I personally loved the book because of how intensely, deliciously sad it was.

My Review:

I had to sit and think about what I wanted to write for a day before I actually tried to write this review. I am familiar with most of what happened during the era this book was set in, but I will have to admit that I knew absolutley nothing of what Russia did to those from Lithuania and the other Baltic States. It was absolutley horrifying how these people were treated. I will never be able to understand how another human being can treat another human being like they are nothing more than a common insect. I can't even fathom the scope of atrocities these people suffered at the hands of those who wanted to extinguish them from existance.

The book was quite captivating and held my intrest. The only thing I did not like was the ending. I really wanted to know more on how she got out of the camp and how she got back in touch with Andrius. I felt it lacked complete closure.

Goodreads quote:

"Imagine that the whole world belongs to you. The birch trees in New Hampshire's White Mountains are yours, and so are the cirrus clouds in the western sky at dusk and the black sand on the beaches of Hawaii's big island.

You own everything, my dear sovereign - the paintings in all the museums of the world, as well as the internet and the wild horses and the roads. Please take good care of it all, OK? Be an enlightened monarch who treats your domain with reverent responsibility. And make sure you also enjoy the full measure of fun that comes with such mastery. Glide through life as if all of creation is yearning to honor and entertain you."
