This is me, thinking, "oh crap, 11:53p and I haven't taken my self-portrait of the day yet, because of the Project Runway finale" (it was so obvious Christian was a judge's favorite, right from the start...like they were trying to make up for Daniel's loss in Season 2)...ANYWAY...
Also spending too much time on the computer these last couple of nights. After a PMS-induced bout of computer ennui, suddenly it's my new best friend again. I swear, if I didn't know any better, I'd think I was manic-depressive. Except that I do need sleep, at least 8 hours a night...Goodnight!!
My company for the plane ride, and I finished the last few pages in the shuttle to Tucson. Note the Amberella piece of "Get It" art in the background.
My Goodreads review:
Closer to 4.5 stars. While engaging and certainly compelling, it will forever be a challenge to approach the brilliance that is the masterpiece A Thousand Ships. Similarly, Stone Blind is a retelling of a well-known myth through the female perspective from a chorus of distinct voices.
Reading Natalie Hayne's excellent Pandora's Jar in 2021 truly awakened me to the raw deal that women in mythology have been granted. In my review of that book, I wrote, "The Greek myths are stories that remain vivid in our imaginations and are retold in many different ways, but for centuries, the viewpoint of the women involved has been relegated to the sidelines, squashed altogether, or chalked up as evil or crazy."
If we really break it down (this shouldn't be a spoiler, but just in case, tread carefully), Medusa was punished by a petulant, petty goddess for being raped by another god, forced into a life of relative isolation, and then killed while she was sleeping. And she's the monster?
Stone Blind also expands the associated myths surrounding Medusa's life and murder, including the escapades of Perseus (a doltish teenage thug who's only given so much help because he's a son of Zeus) and his mother Danaë, the birth of Athene from Zeus's forehead, and Cassiope and Andromeda of Ethiopia, among others. This tale poses essential questions of perception and judgement, what constitutes a family, and the power of three women together, while simultaneously being quite funny in more than a few moments.
The portrayal of the Olympian gods as spiteful, vengeful, vain injustice collectors and sexual predators isn't new, but this narrative elucidates how they're the true villains of most myths. The passages about Zeus often had me visualizing Jeff Goldblum in this role from the excellent Netflix series Kaos (which was sadly cancelled after one season...womp womp). While it's no surprise he's a malignant narcissist, how is the supposed king of the gods is so insecure and paranoid?
Debi Mazar as a long-dead Medusa is also brilliant in Kaos, serving as one of Hades's middle managers. In line with the injustices that unfold in this book, though, she's also part of a rebel resistance. I like that ending for Medusa much better than the one she's dealt here.
