The art of making folk toys is almost as old as art itself. Throughout history and throughout the world, people everywhere have created toys in the style of the local folk art. For these artists and artisans, making the toy itself involved as much creativity as the child experienced in playing with it.

- That sounds somewhat ...eh, simple. Seeing the slogan in the photo covering office windows of Ernst & Young Finland made me think that no progress happens unless all involved permanently get rid of at least some of their old habits, ways of reacting etc. This can be really challenging (well - for everyone but especially) for the visionaries. Innovators are crucial for starting processes and waking up people - but the future is created by everyone together. Visionaries sooner or later feel very lonely unless they take some steps to meet the rest of the future creators.
Background
I recently discovered Marcel Minnaert's book Light and color in the outdoors, which provides a layperson accessible description of countless optical phenomena (using simple trigonometry). It motivated me to revisit this image, focusing on the developing the shadows. I hadn't previously appreciated the differing reflections from window glass and plate glass.
Technical trivia
After adjustments in lightroom (distortion, EV gradients, straightening) the Restyle preset "Strong BW contrasts" was applied, separating the cars and pedestrian from the shadows.

I heard this story from Kelly on this last trip while noticing a Whitely print he had.

Foodspotting:
There are more and more apps for making various aspects of our lives more social. Goodreads and LibraryThing for books, Yelp for community reviews and business, GetGlue for movies and games, Foursquare for simply moving about town.
The whole social food app market is a fascinating space, targeting people in the place and moment where they make their decision. Anyone else ever buy something on impulse? Anyone NOT shop by impulse?
There was a great panel discussion of this phenomena in InternetWeek last Month.

Foodspotting was one of the companies on the panel, along with Consmr, Snooth, and Grubster. I noticed a few folk I know on Foodspotting, so that is the one I'm trying out first. It is a simple concept - go to a restaurant, snap a pic of your meal with your smartphone camera, and say what you liked or didn't.
For myself, I actually like it better from the point of view of a lurker, rather than for choosing a restaurant. I get all kinds of wonderful ideas for what to make at home. I guess I'm a bit strange though.
These types of apps do have me thinking about how these simple social concepts connect in learning, and in critical thinking, as well as personal decisionmaking. Who do you trust and why? This is a very different process when choosing food than in choosing a book. It is intriguing looking at these different types of apps and thinking behind the scenes how they might really be working.

My 2018 Goodreads goal was 25 books and I only read 16, most of which were short (average length: 208 pages). Seven of them were public domain books about singing (which have all been pretty fascinating, but most people probably don't care about them 😂). Singing is one of the reasons I haven't read much, because I always read at night and I always practice singing first thing in the morning, so it's hard to have both and still get enough sleep. Anyway, that's why I'm not beating myself up about not meeting my goal, because I was doing other stuff that was fulfilling and productive. It was a fair trade. . Books I rated 5 stars: - Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children #3) by Seanan McGuire (READ THIS SERIES, IT'S AWESOME) - Great Singers on the Art of Singing: Educational Conferences with Foremost Artists by James Francis Cooke . That's it! I've never had so few. I did enjoy most of the rest of what I read (my average rating was 3.8), but this was a slow reading year so there weren't as many standouts. So two 4-star books I'd recommend: - The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James . I do intend to read more in 2019, if I can get my routine balanced out!
