Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai province - Thailand

There is JOY IN WORK. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. (Henry Ford)
Work hard at whatever you do, because there will be no action, no thought, no knowledge, no wisdom in the world of the dead--and that is where you are going. (King)

It's been a while since I posted one from my hometown. Shot from Mount Washington west of the Duquesne Incline.

This moment was a total revelation for me and, during the development process, I realized the reason: the location of monuments perfectly respects the Golden Triangle, the Golden Spiral and the Golden Section. It's incredible!

Winter wheat that was planted in the middle of September is already sprouting by the end of September near Chinook, Montana.
Stunning infinity pool with the morning fog having just lifted. From the edge of the pool you can see both Laos and Myanmar (Burma)! Perched on a ridge overlooking the hills of Myanmar and Laos, Anantara's Golden Triangle resort is as enchanting as the region in which it is located.
This image ranks as my 2nd most viewed. Seems like it featured in many blogs and infinity pool lists. Not bad for a photo taken with a crappy compact (after I lost the charger for my DSLR)!

I made several trips to Southeast Asia in the 1970s. The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia was a must-read book among travellers at the time. It deals with heroin trafficking in Southeast Asia and the CIA's complicity and aid to the Southeast Asian opium/heroin trade. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Politics_of_Heroin_in_Southeast... That is how I became interested in the Golden Triangle, the world's biggest opium producer before Afghanistan took over in the 1980s when the CIA's secret war against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan helped transform the tribal states of the Afghani-Pakistani border area into a launchpad for the global heroin trade. I used to follow trails into the hills not knowing where they would take me. I met this woman from the Lisu tribe working in a poppy field on the Myanmar side of the unmarked border having wandered over from Thailand. She uses a tool of four sickle-shaped knives that are firmly tied together to make 4 parallel cuts into the poppy capsule through which a milky sap escapes. The sap dries overnight and becomes brown sticky raw opium which is scraped off with a blade the next day. The hill tribes practice slash-and-burn agriculture. The method begins by cutting down the forest in an area. The downed vegetation, or "slash", is then left to dry and the biomass is burned, resulting in a nutrient-rich layer of ash that makes the soil fertile. After 3-5 years the field is abandoned and the forest destruction continues. It is an unsustainable method of agriculture that has wreaked havoc on forests the world over. I used the Covid lockdown to digitise my slide collection. The photo was taken in the Golden Triangle in Feb 1976 with a Minolta SR-T 101 body and Minolta MC Rokkor 50mm f/1.4 lens on Kodachrome 64 slide film. Digitised using a Nikon ES-1 Slide copying adapter screwed to the front of my macro lens and placed in front of a neutral light source (5000 Kelvin LED panel). I take a RAW photo which is then treated with Topaz DeNoise AI for sharpening and noise/grain reduction. Mouseover photo for more details.
The last tourist operation to run in Lake County, Florida was the Royal Palm Railway Experience (formally known as the Orlando & Northwestern Railway). Located approximately an hour northwest of Orlando, they ran passenger trains between Tavares, Eustis, and Mount Dora on Florida Central trackage from 2017 to 2020. Here is one of their Christmas trains stopped at the Tavares depot with Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum #1912 on point. The depot was constructed in 2013 by the Lake County government for the Orange Blossom Cannonball train, which previously ran on this line with steam power. It is a replica of the 1800's depot which originally stood here and now houses the Lake County History Museum. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that passenger service will ever return to this line.

Description: 2014-04-07 - This shot was taken during my last visit to the Trader's Sky Bar. Missing out on the awesome sunset the previous day and also the burning sunrise that day made me determined to go out for a sunset session with two other friends. Though it was raining approximately an hour before sunset, Alhamdulillah the sky clears just enough to let the golden ray of the sun to shine gloriously that afternoon. The image is part of a sequence of images taken for a Day to Night Timelapse over Kuala Lumpur City.
