According to legend, Canterbury was founded by Rudilibas in 900 BC and called Caerkent by the ancient Britons. From 43 AD, the Roman Durovernum Cantiacorum was built here and developed into an administrative centre. From 200 AD, the city was surrounded by city walls. Æthelberht of Kent, who ruled from 568 AD, made Canterbury his residence.

After the Anglo-Saxons converted to Christianity, the city became the seat of the archbishop. In 842 and 851, Canterbury suffered great loss of life in Danish raids. In 1011, the city was besieged by a Viking army, culminating in the sack of the city.

The people of Canterbury remembered this destruction and offered no resistance to the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066.

In 1363, during the Hundred Years' War, a commission found that the Roman wall had eroded due to dilapidation, stone theft and ditch filling. Between 1378 and 1402, the wall was virtually rebuilt and new wall towers added. In 1448, Canterbury was granted city charter, which gave the city a mayor and high sheriff.

In the mid-16th century, many Huguenots, facing persecution fled and resettled. The first Huguenot church in Canterbury was founded around 1548. With the accession of Mary I, the Huguenot inhabitants of Canterbury were forced to flee in 1553, but after the accession of Elizabeth I, a number of Huguenots returned. In the 17th century, French-speaking Huguenots made up two-fifths of Canterbury's population.

Canterbury was not only the starting point of the historic Via Francigena, which leads to Rome, but also the destination of many pilgrimages. One of these is described by Geoffrey Chaucer, author of "The Canterbury Tales".

The cathedral towers over all the buildings in the city and can be seen from everywhere.

In 597, missionaries led by the monk Augustine arrived in Canterbury. Remains of this first cathedral were found under the removed floor slabs during renovation work in 1993, including remains from Roman times. . In 950, the building was renovated by Archbishop Bodo. The church burnt down shortly after the Norman conquest in 1067. Begun under Lanfrank, a confidant of William the Conqueror, it then took several centuries to create what can be seen today: a very complicated and extensive spatial structure with Romanesque, early Gothic and late Gothic sections.

The earliest coloured glass windows date from the late 12th century.

Most are 13th and 14th century.

The work of widening and renovation of the "Pieve" (probably dated back to the V century) started about in the middle of XII century, changed the simple original building in one of the most important Romanesque-Gothic churches in Tuscany.

The beautiful romanesque closter, modified in the XV century, goes back to the second half of XII century.

The churchtower was realized probably on a project by Guidetto from Como in the beginnine of 1200, and was completed with a three light window in 1356-1357.

At the same time as the building of the Holy Waste's Chapel in 1386, the construction of the current late gothic front by Lorenzo di Filippo started. The front has a basament in alberese material as also the made upper part. However, it was completed only in the next century in which also the great portal with a decorated lunette by glasswindow terra-cotta of Andrea della Robbia and the outsider pulpit of Donatello (the original of the parapet is how in the Museum of "Opera del Duomo") were built.

In spite of a great number of intervations in the centuries the building preserves a stylistics unity: inside the transsept by Giovanni Pisano (1317-1368) is well situated in the plant formed by three aisles with apses on the peak, subdivided in six arcades for each side (dated back to the beginning of the XIII century), while the pulpit as globet (XV century), by Nino da Fiesole and Antonio Rossellino, is similar to that one by Donatello.

Among the most beautiful works of art contained in the done there are famous cycles of frescos: the stories of S. Stephen and S. Giovanni Battista (where "Herod's banquet" with the dancing Salomè is striking). They were made by Filippo Lippi and his collaborators (1452-65) and they decorate Main Chapel.. The stories of the Virgin Mary and of the Holy Waste (1392-95) by Agnolo Gaddi and his workshop in the Holy Girdle Chapel, and the stories of the Virgin Mary and S. Stefano concordatly assigned to Paolo Uccello 1397-1475) in the Assunta Chapel.

We remember also the precious sculptoral work like "Madonna dell'ulivo" tabernacle, (1480) by Giuliano brothers Giovanni and Benedetto da Maiano; "Holy Mother with Her Child" by Giovanni Pisano and the beautiful bronze crucified on the altar (1653) by Ferdinando Tacca.

Tourists in front of and in the doorway of the Scottish National War Museum inside Edinburgh Castle, built on the north side of Crown Square. The memorial was opened in 1927 by the Prince of Wales. The building is wonderfully decorated. This memorial commemorates Scottish soldiers, dying in 2 world wars, and in the conflicts that happened after that. The inscription above the doorway reads: "To the glory of God & in memory of Scots who fell 1914 - 1918". There are carvings on the outside walls of the memorial. The Edinburgh Castle is a historic structure, with the royal castle dating back to the time of the kind David I from the 12th century. The Castle is built on a volcanic high, called the Castle Rock. The Castle was very important in the medieval ages, when there were conflicts to ensure Scottish independence from England. However, by the time of the 15th century, the importance of the Castle as the site of political power and dispute had reduced, and over the centuries, this importance reduced. After the crown of England and Scotland was unified in 1603, this decline in the importance of the castle reduced further. It was only in the last 200 years that there was an effort to do restoration of the castle and emphasize its historical importance.

The Castle dominates the skyline of Edinburgh, especially because it is built on a higher platform than the rest of the city, being built on a volcanic high. The castle height made it a good defensive platform, but the hard rock on which it was built also made it difficult to get water through wells.

The importance of the Castle for Scotland is very high, with the castle being a recognizable symbol of the city of Edinburgh, and it is used in the logos of many institutions, used on the banknotes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
