I was given this little key chain free: we were shopping in a book store and I found this little camera. The clerk could not find a price for it so she gave it to me free :)
The summer rains have given Joshua Tree National Park something it seldom has: a green forest floor. The entire park hasn't sprouted as a result of flash floods, but we're seeing areas where the Joshua Tree forest floor is green, (like this.) In one spot, the ground was green on one side of the road and dry sand on the other. I've learned the rain and lightning can be very localized.
It was 105-107 degrees F (40.5-41.7 Celsius) last time I visited. I tried a dirt road which warned it was not maintained or patrolled and that park visitors had died from heat-related illness. It started out pretty ordinary. After about 5 miles, the sand was so deep that I had to push hard on the throttle to keep moving forward. I recalled a sign that said there were sheer drop offs along one side of the road ahead. At about the six mile mark, I found some ground hard enough to support a six-point turn. I went back out the way I had entered.
The NPS signs seem to be excessively cautious in other parks. The ones here were accurate for my equipment and driving skill. I think a air conditioned Unimog with decent tires would've been a good choice. Better yet, three vehicles with lots of recovery equipment.
When it's this hot, the animals are often invisible.
The Park has been hammered by flash floods that closed some of the main roads. Creek-scale water flows crossed the pavement and washed debris into the roadway.

From a graciously given and thankfully received borrowed camera with an adapted sensor to deliver Full Spectrum Photographs these images record something from the wavelengths of light that our eyes do not see bringing a representation of the Full Spectrum of light into tones that we can see.
You might see a discorporate hand, either five legs, maybe more, or less. They are my hand and legs.
The wavelengths visible to other than human eyes can be explored with a Full Spectrum Camera. My friend who loaned me this camera and a set of lenses and filters describes the experience of dogs that cannot easily discern between a red ball and the green of the grass on which it sits.
A Full Spectrum Digital Camera is often a modified camera that can record light beyond the human visible spectrum. By capturing ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light the images reveal a now visible representation of the sight given in the wider wavelengths. This can be achieved by removing the built-in UV/IR cut filter found in standard cameras, this allows for a wider range of light to reach the sensor and to be recorded in a manner visible to the human eye. With the addition of either external filters to the lens, or clip in to the sensor, photographers can choose to block certain wavelengths. These additional filters can be used to isolate ultraviolet UV, infrared IR, or human visible light to achieve specific effects that include using the camera for lowlight photography.

This October has given us wonderful days, it's not raining, it's true, and this will be a problem, but after a torrid and so hot summer that did not allow it to stand out except in the shade, it's so enjoyable to absorb this sun and enjoy this light.....

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The enormous Ever Given container ship, wedged in Egypt’s Suez Canal, is visible in new images captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission.
The giant container ship ran aground in the canal on 23 March on its journey from China to the Netherlands. The image on the left, captured on 21 March, shows routine maritime traffic in the canal with vessels visible every 2 to 3 km. The image on the right, captured on 25 March, shows the 400 m-ship blocking the canal.
The canal connects Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Egyptian city of Suez on the Red Sea. The blockage has delayed hundreds of tankers and vessels in reaching their destination, and more maritime traffic is still heading to the crucial waterway. Ships can be seen accumulating in the Gulf of Suez.
Tug boats are working hard to dislodge the 200 000 tonne ship, however Egyptian authorities say it is unclear when the route will reopen.
The two identical Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites carry radar instruments to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of imagery of Earth’s surface, making it ideal to monitor ship traffic.
The sea surface reflects the radar signal away from the satellite, and makes water appear dark in the image. This contrasts with metal objects, in this case the ships in the bay, which appear as bright dots in the dark waters.

We had just given our yorkie, Maggie a bath before I snapped this shot. As always after a bath, she was very excited and running all over the yard as fast as possible. That made this an extremely tough shot to get in focus. She was running straight at me when I took this image, which made it even harder. Yorkies have great spirit and I believe that this image shows that clearly. What do you think?

I had given a talk in Banff the evening before, and because we were staying overnight there, we decided to do one of our favourite hikes to view the last of Alpine Larches. The trail is so well done, we completed the 12.5 km' return distance in 4 and half hours, and hardly noticed the elevation gain was a hair under 1000 m's...

The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. Given its exciting history as a Wrightbus demonstrator, WHV111 must surely find working the no. 1 day in and day out rather dull.
Once in every blue moon a bus that isn't an LT gets to work on this route. Usually it's a bus from Camberwell, but using one from the no. 1 is doable as well. When the VWLs were still around they would rarely venture out onto the 453, despite most of them being properly blinded and not all that different from the Enviro400s of the day. Supposedly TfL did not approve of those workings, and I struggle to see why. Buses older than the VWLs have worked the route before, so it's not an age thing. They had the long wheelbase, but the LTs are even longer.
Because WHV111 used to have LED displays instead of rollerblinds, the front aperture is too small, which means at most angles some part of the blind is cut off.
Ashlar is the term given to finely dressed stone, cut to give almost invisible joints. This was always very expensive and was often only used on the front facades of buildings, not only in Bath but even on grand country houses.
I seem to remember my dad, a stone mason, saying that the surfaces shouldn't be more than an old penny's width out of true.
At its best, ashlar looks like a continuous sheet of stone, and in the main its not age and weathering that make the joints visible, but modern cleaning techniques that often remove the delicate surface and open up the joints.

r was first given the right to hold markets in 1066 by the newly victorious William the Conqueror. In a congratulatory gesture, he conferred the title of Manor of Manchester upon one of his valued knights. And with the honour came the privilege of holding markets and fairs.
The council's longstanding link with markets was created in 1845, when the authority bought the city's Market Rights from Sir Oswald Moseley. A year later, the Corporation of Manchester was given the power to provide and regulate markets in the city under the 1846 Manchester Markets Act.
For the next three decades, most markets in the city served the wholesale trade, dealing mostly in the slaughter of livestock and the preparation of meat for cold stores and general sale.
In 1872, the Smithfield area around Shude Hill and Thomas Street was transformed by the creation of the wholesale fruit, vegetable and fish markets. Situated in what is now known as the Northern Quarter, Smithfield was a cavernous structure filled with the vibrancy and chaos of goods being loaded and deals being made.
The beautifully carved arches of the original fish market can still be seen from the cobbles of the High Street.
The fringes of the area became a haven for retail stalls and barrow boys, selling anything from buns to books. The remnants of this early era can still be seen in Church Street and Shude Hill.

The majority of the interior of Schindlers Factory in Krakow is now turned into a wonderful multimedia Museum, this stairwell maybe gives something of the original atmosphere as seen in the Schindlers List film.

Long live as lightning, this giant otter of Amazonia will have given trouble to us to photograph her so much the conditions of light it was bad and so much is fast and moves ceaselessly. This animal of almost 2 meters long and heavy between 24 and 28 kilograms is very difficult to meet because unfortunately she is a member of animals placed on the red list of THE UICN... But marked hercSalvador situated in the national park of Manu, possesses an incredible biodiversity and will offer us this rare show(entertainment).

The Historic Capitol, sometimes called "The Old Capitol," built in 1845, was threatened with demolition in the late 1970s when the new capitol building was built. Having been restored to its 1902-version in 1982, the Historic Capitol is directly behind the new Capitol building. Its restored space includes the Governor's Suite, Supreme Court, House of Representatives and Senate chambers, rotunda, and halls. Its adapted space contains a museum exhibiting the state's political history, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, which is managed by the Florida Legislature. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the Historic Capitol Building (Restoration) on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.
The New Tower houses executive and legislative offices and the chambers of the Florida Legislature (consisting of the Florida Senate and Florida House of Representatives).
The buildings are universally, though informally, known as the Old Capitol and the New Capitol; the former is sometimes called the Historic Capitol, or also, confusingly, the Florida State Capitol. The latter was its official name prior to the construction of the New Capitol in 1977, and was so called by the National Park Service even after the New Capitol was operating. Its legal name today, however, is the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. The New Capitol, as a whole, does not have a legal name. When it was planned, the Capitol Complex (which is a legal name) was going to consist of the House and Senate chambers, and the twenty-two-story office building.

This was a rose that was given to each graduate to give to someone who inspired them and helped them get to the point of graduating. My sister-in-law, who graduated with me gave me hers stating that without my help she never would have gone that far... I gave her mine for giving me the incentive to do the best that I possibly could.... Then we cried....

Also, after posting a number of winter photos recently, I need to add some colour to my photostream.
"Waterton Lakes National Park is where three friends (Anne B, Janet and Shirley) and I went the last two days, 11 and 12 June 2018. Part of Monday was spent travelling south to Waterton Lakes National Park, stopping at several places en route, including Lundbreck Falls. With no stops, it takes roughly three hours to get there. We stayed on Monday night at the Bear Mountain Motel in Waterton town. Tuesday morning, we drove around the Waterton area, hoping to maybe see more bears, and then made our way back north, reaching Calgary late afternoon/early evening. As it was, we were so lucky to see a gorgeous Cinnamon Black Bear, at first from a great distance and then unexpectedly close. Also spotted a Black Bear in among the blackened, burned trees that were near the edge of the road. It was very difficult to see and impossible to find an open spot through which to take photos - but it was our second bear.
I had been hoping to someday get a chance to get down to Waterton, especially to see how it looked after the devastating Kenow wildfire that damaged or destroyed so much of the park in 2017. Most of the park is still closed, but the whole town site and Chief Mountain Parkway and area are open. To me, the park looked beautiful, with enough green areas to contrast with the dead trees on the mountain sides. Firefighters did such a brilliant job last year of saving the whole town, and a team of firefighters form Calgary had been given the task of doing all they could to save the historic Prince of Wales Hotel. There it still stands, untouched. One can see how close to the town and iconic Hotel the fire had come - right up to the very edge, where a sprinkler system had been set up before the fire got close.
"Built in 1926-27 during one of Waterton’s windiest and snowiest winters, the Prince of Wales Hotel is the park's most recognized landmark.
During its construction the extreme weather conditions and poor access created many problems for contractors Douglas Oland and James Scott, from Cardston, Alberta.
On December 10 1926 hurricane-force winds (estimated at 145 km/hr) blew each of the hotel's wings about 7.5 cm off their foundation. The men managed to winch the sections back in line. Three months later winds reached speeds of over 129 km/hr, again pushing the building off its foundation. This time Oland feared structural damage if they tried to pull back the now fully-framed building so he decided to leave it slightly out of plume.
The hotel is named after Edward, Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VIII, and, like its namesake, it has a colourful history. If its Douglas fir pillars could talk they would tell you a tale of American imagination and money, built with Canadian grit and patience.
Today, many people recognize the Prince of Wales as a railway hotel, but few realize it was built by the Great Northern of United States ... and not the Canadian Pacific.
In February 1993 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board approved the Prince of Wales' designation as a National Historic Site, recognizing its architectural style (rustic design tradition, with peaked roofs, gables, balconies and timber-frame interior that give it an appearance of a giant alpine chalet) and its contribution to tourism in the mountains. On July 23 1995 a commemorative plaque ceremony was held at the hotel." From Parks Canada.

Wild animals, plants and birds were seen. There were plenty of wildflowers, though I suspect we may have been just a little early for many species. I was so pleased to spot a small patch of what I thought might be Mariposa Lilies near the edge of the road that we were driving on. We stopped for me to check and, sure enough, my friends were able to see these unusual flowers for the first time. Chipmunk, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels, Columbian Ground Squirrels and deer were seen. Not a huge variety of birds, but we were only able to look in such a limited space. It was great, though, to see two distant Sandhill Cranes and a distant Common Loon on her nest.
Apart from the most unpleasant, very strong wind all day both days, we were very lucky with the weather for our two days. No rain, thank goodness. The morning was chilly and so was the night. Yesterday, Tuesday, the temperature got up to 20C on our way home."
Kohima is the hilly capital of India's north eastern border state of Nagaland which shares its borders with Burma. It lies in Kohima District and is one of the three Nagaland towns with Municipal council status along with Dimapur and Mokokchung.
Kohima is the land of the Angami Naga tribe. The name, Kohima, was officially given by the British as they could not pronounce the Angami name Kewhima or Kewhira (Tenyidie for "the land where the flower Kewhi grows"). It is called after the wild flowering plant Kewhi, found in the mountains. Earlier, Kohima was also known as Thigoma. Kohima is located south of Kohima District and has an average elevation of 1261 metres (4137 feet). The town of Kohima is located on the top of a high ridge and the town serpentines along the top of the mountain ranges as is typical of most Naga settlements.

Sawley Abbey was founded in 1146 on land given by William, third Lord Percy. The Percys, Northumberland’s greatest family, remained patrons of the abbey for much of its existence.The help of these wealthy benefactors proved invaluable in the 1280s when it seemed likely that the monks would abandon the site: they claimed that poor harvests, marshy ground and the inhospitable climate made life at Sawley untenable. In response, Maud de Percy, Countess of Warwick, gave valuable lands and churches at Rimmington (near Barnoldswick), Ilkley, Gargrave and Tadcaster. With this new endowment the monks stayed put.
Their problems, though, did not disappear. In 1296 Stanlaw Abbey in Cheshire was refounded at Whalley, nine miles from Sawley, and the two Cistercian houses immediately quarrelled. Their lands adjoined and they squabbled over grain supplies and fishing rights in the river Ribble.
The feuding officially ended in 1305, but the monks of Sawley, the senior foundation, continued to feel aggrieved. Sawley was considerably poorer than Whalley: it was impoverished by litigation, the ‘cruel and inhuman spoliation’ that accompanied Scottish raids about 1320, and the expense of providing board and lodging to travellers – unlike many Cistercian houses it lay on a busy main road.
In spring 1536 Sawley surrendered during Henry VIII’s Suppression of the Monasteries. However, that autumn, during the northern rising known as the Pilgrimage of Grace, the abbey was restored under a new abbot, William Trafford. The rebellion failed and Trafford was hanged at Lancaster in March 1537 and the abbey immediately plundered of its valuables.
During the following three centuries all the high-quality stone was taken and reused in neighbouring farms and cottages, and many of the abbey buildings disappeared. In 1848 the first archaeological investigation of the ruins was undertaken, and during the 20th century the site was taken into the care of the state, cleared of debris and conserved.

Given the unpleasant sciatic pain I've been experiencing lately instead of swimming I opted for some retail therapy. The excuse is an attempt to reduce the number (therefore the weight) of gear that I take on my walks. Recently I've been a bit more disciplined - if memory serves, I have not acquired a lens since before the lockdown.

The " Lagoa of a Frouxeira " ( Laguna de la Fouxeira , also known as Laguna de Valdoviño) is a wet area of great importance in the peninsular Northwest , especially for its remarkable ornithological value , given the role that unfolds as a resting place for numerous migratory birds during spring and autumn steps.
Little French Key’s surrounding area was first settled by a Frenchman pirate and was thus called “Frenchman Cay,” which was later abbreviated to French Cay or Key. Little French Key is one of 53 Cays in and around the Bay Islands. and it is without a doubt one of the most popular, if not the most popular destination on Roatan. It is certainly a favorite among cruise ship travelers as the cay offers an all in one experience.
The key offers visitors, Horseback Riding, Snorkeling, an underwater museum, a wild animal refuge, Kayaking and
paddle-boarding.

Locals in Brisbane who regularly use the now famous Nudgee Beach (!) for photography will recognise this as the boardwalk through the mangroves which draws a large circle around the wetlands that line the beach. One side follows this creek which seems to be unnamed (the next two north are Nundah and Cabbage Tree Creeks respectively). The boardwalk has some nice little benches to rest awhile and consider the importance of the mangroves to the environment and ecology of Moreton Bay, knowing that mangroves are one of the best carbon sinks in nature.

The beach itself is actually along the track behind me, still a kilometre or so before you get to access it easily, but this also passes a bird hide and some great spots to see colourful crabs emerging from their holes in the mud along the way. The creek is used for school groups and others canoeing and ends in a wetland area below a major water transfer station.
