Michelob had been laying in the snow and decided that when we arrived it'd be a good time to get up and come over to us.
What spring means to me is the return of my sumac jungle. It takes well into June to open fully, spreading a canopy over this quiet corner of the back lawn. For two months straight last summer, I cut back the competing wild roses, saving the desperate pines and birches, and giving the sumac room to spread. My interference with nature involves just hanging on the outskirts, making minor changes with drainage and undergrowth, taking one thing out while I let another be. I'm no gardener – you'll never catch me planting or watering, but I have an opinion on what live and dies. If something beautiful gets growing, I try my best to ward off intruders. Much the same, I'm no pet owner – I'll never feed or befriend the groundhog that burrows here, but I watch from a distance and make sure he stays safe. You can do a lot in the wild without domestication, and I make my minimal intrusions.
