Beaufort, Daniel A Civil and Ecclesiastical Map of Ireland. London, Faden, 1792

Daniel Beaufort’s beautiful map of Ireland is one of only three maps produced by this clergyman cartographer. Of Huguenot origin, Beaufort succeeded his father as Rector of Navan, County Meath. His map of Ireland demonstrates the first use of acres in an Irish map and was considered one of the most accurate of its time. Beaufort wrote a book recounting his experiences compiling the map, Memoir of the Map of Ireland, which is also held in the Special Collections. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Irish Academy. His daughter Frances designed the title piece of the map, and was Maria Edgeworth’s stepmother. She survived her step-daughter to become one of the editors of the novelist’s letters. Beaufort also had a son, Francis, who was the inventor of the Beaufort Wind Force Scale, a scale still in use today.

for a fee, you could have your children dressed in kimono and have their picture taken by a professional photographer. It was a bit pricey, but the end result (not seen here) was worth it.

Opportunities to get out and make new pictures are, of necessity, limited during the COVID-19 outbreak so, from 1st April 2020, I've been hunting through my archives to find images taken on the same date in previous years. I've tried to choose eight each day. They've mostly not been published here before and potentially cover the period 1980-2021. I hope you enjoy them.

We stopped by the Steamboat Building today, to see the installation progress for Exploring the Chesapeake—Mapping the Bay exhibition, which opens May 19, 2018 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in the hip, historic, waterfront Town of St. Michaels. Wait till you see the floor map! Coming soon...

No one imagines that a symphony is supposed to improve in quality as it goes along, or that the whole object of playing it is to reach the finale. The point of music is discovered in every moment of playing and listening to it.

It is the same, I feel, with the greater part of our lives, and if we are unduly absorbed in improving them we may forget altogether to live them.
