The Linachtalsperre in Vohrenbach (Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg) is a 25 meter high and 143 meter long dam (buttress dam) of concrete. It is the only arch dam row in Germany and is a protected monument. For cost reasons, this material-saving design was chosen. Other examples of the principle of construction of such a dam in "loose construction" there is including Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland and the USA. In Germany there is only one other buttress dam: the Oleftalsperre. However, this was built in the pillar cell design.

Putting an article in front of a publication’s title seems to be en vogue.

In German language, there are as many as three definite articles: the masculine form ‘der’, as in ‘Der Freitag’ [The Friday], the feminine one ‘die’, as in ‘Die Tageszeitung’ [The Daily News], and the neuter ‘das’, as in ‘Das Magazin’. Don’t ask why a day of the week is considered to be male.

We really should introduce a fourth form so that ‘Zitty Berlin’ can have a unique definite article, too.

Sign in Bernese dialect. i'll find out what it means, but it was in front of a food stall, so I'm guessing they're edible ;-)

The Eastside Gallery in Berlin makes use of a lengthy stretch of the Berlin Wall (yes, parts do remain), to display art. In some instances the art is essentially graffiti, but there are some gems. On the side facing the river Spree we saw an exhibition of photographs depicting surviving victims of the Syrian civil war, accompanied by their personal stories. The photographer made the point that statistics are abstract and we engage more with the stories of individuals; and the media shy away from depicting maimed people in case it offends someone.

Try saying that fast three times without being German!!

eich = oak tree

huhnchen = chicken

squirrel = oak chicken

(I don't really think that is the derivation of the word "squirrel," but we had a good laugh about this back in 2001, at a dinner in Venice (but we were slighty tipsy from wine), and just recently, on Skype (stone cold sober). Hugs, Thomas!!)
