Captured at one of the thousands of geothermal locations in Yellowstone National Park.

Geothermal energy, the most important source of energy.

Geothermal area is defined by the temperature of the groundwater at a depth of around 1,000m: if it is higher than 150°C (the boiling point is shifted due to the pressure).

This energy provides electricity + hot water + streets can be heated in Reykjavik in winter

Geothermal Springs | Yellowstone National Park

We visited the geothermal area Hverir near to midge infested Lake Myvatn to get the smell of H2S and the clouds of steam. Boiling mud pools of a lighter grey than NZ, cracked mud, sulphur vents abound. Walking within the roped fence paths is a must.

Another destination I was really looking forward to was the geothermal field near Lake Mývatn, Námafjall.

I love this place and all the different colours and textures and details.

The natural warm water pool in Landmannalaugar (central highlands of Iceland) is quite unique and an ideal bathing place all year around, with temperature of around 36-40 degrees centigrade even in the midst of a snowy winter.

One of many geothermal pools in Iceland wich is great to relax in between photography hikes in the highlands.

Shades of green cover the mountains in one of the geothermal areas in Landmannalaugar.

During the second day we tried to get away from the bad weather on the coast by driving through Landmannalaugar. It was a long drive back so no chance to really explore much, no sunrise or sunset, but was still great to see this beautiful area again. I plan to be back again some day when I can spend more time there.

Landmannalaugar is a place in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland. It is at the edge of Laugahraun lava field, which was formed in an eruption around the year 1477. It is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and surrounding landscape.

Gunnuhver is a highly active geothermal area of mud pools and steam vents on the southwest part of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Named after an angry female ghost, Gudrun, whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs by a priest 400 years ago. The steamy area has an eerie atmosphere and an incredible sulfur vapor.

A unique characteristic of the Gunnuhver hot springs is that the groundwater here is 100% seawater, unlike other geothermal areas on the island. The colorful minerals in the ground provide vibrant hues, but danger is very real with temperatures over 300°C (570°F) so it is important to tread lightly and stick to the trails. Iceland´s largest mud pool resides at Gunnuhver; it is 20 meters (65 ft) wide of violently boiling earth.

An inukshuk in Iceland, overlooking Geysir, Strokkur, and other bubbling geothermal pools. Yes, this adventure was very, very, very good.

I've been asked to sell prints, and have been considering it for a while. I think I'm going to pull the trigger this week, so if there's anything that ever struck your fancy, let me know so I can post it in the upcoming shop.

Around the geothermally active area of Geysir, Iceland. The water here boils straight out of the ground. It really does seem like another world.
