A view across the geothermal area, Gunnuhver, shows some of the thermal features and power generation facilities This highly active geothermal area, which is also called the Reykjanes Geothermal Field, sits on the southwest side of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. Altered ground and sinter encrusted in places with native sulfur and sulphates make up the foreground, The visible features visible from left to right in the center of the photo are: Observation platform on Kísilhól (“silica hill”) surrunded by solfataras; Grey Lagoon; Powerplant group containing fumaroles, steaming ground and mudpots; power generation wells and plants.

 

The development of the Geothermal power plant in 2006 effected the hydrothermal features. Steaming off the ground at Reykjanes increased markedly as a consequence of pressure drawdown in the geothermal reservoir after exploitation. Some boreholes drilled during development became steam vents or mud pools. Geysers once known in the area have all disappeared.

Another area just outside Reykjavik where the geothermal activity is obvious. Steam mixed with sulphur escapes from deep below the earth with a constant flow of boiling water.

The same geothermal system in Wyoming shared by Yellowstone Caldera.

The municipal park in Rotorua is not quite what one imagines. From our parking space, it started out as normal. Green grass, some nice flower beds, plenty of trees.

 

It did not take many steps until we encountered the first of numerous fenced off, but viewable, geothermal pools with all sorts of colours, features and aromas. Quite something! The signs about not climbing in due to the scolding temperatures, being careful about the gases etc. were bad enough but it was probably the one about not putting your head in the pool where bathing was permitted due to the risk of amoebic meningitis that got me.

 

And they say Australia is dangerous!

Námafjall, Iceland

The violence of this amazing landscape seems to echo the fact that this was once an important sulphur mining area for the manufacture of gunpowder.

The Námafjall or Hverir geothermal area near Mývatn Lake in northern Iceland features bubbling pools of mud and fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas.

Islandia en invierno.

Este fue mi primer viaje fotográfico, y lo hice con Fran Llano y Foto Earth Travel.

Nunca había antes había hecho un viaje de esta forma. Todo fue novedoso: contacté con Fran Llano a través de Facebook, todas las gestiones fueron por internet. No sabía ni que me iba a encontrar, ni con qué tipo de gente iba a compartir el viaje. Tampoco sabía el nivel de fotografía del resto del grupo. Bueno, sabía el mío y no era muy bueno.

Con todo, me embarqué en esta aventura y el resultado fue un gran viaje, que recuerdo con mucha estima. A parte de aprender mucho en fotografía y conseguir hacer fotos a las Auroras Boreales (todo un reto); hice muy buenos amigos que aún conservo y con los que aun quedo de vez en cuando para hacer salidas fotográficas.

Por supuesto, este no iba a ser el último viaje fotográfico después de la gran experiencia.

How eager I was to start this album!

Iceland in winter.

This was my first photography trip, and I did it with Fran Llano and Foto Earth Travel.

I had never made a trip like this before. Everything was new: I contacted with Fran Llano through Facebook, all the procedures were online. I did not know what I was going to find, or what kind of people I was going to share the journey with. I also didn't know the photography level of the rest of the group. Well, it tasted mine and it wasn't very good.

All in all, I embarked on this adventure and the result was a great journey, which I remember with great esteem. Apart from learning a lot in photography and getting to take photos of the Northern Lights (quite a challenge); I made very good friends that I still have and with whom I still meet from time to time to do photographic outings.

Of course, this was not going to be the last photography trip after the great experience.

I hope you like it just as I enjoyed it.

Just dropping in one from Orakei Korako a park where Earth's mantel has a leak from the high temperatures within. This near Lake Taupo and south of Rotorua and also far from the island volcano that erupted.

We are on a long trip still and I confess to reading a few books but I will be back to Flickr in a while.
