The Namafjall geothermic area in northern Iceland near Myvatn.

Canary Springs, the largest spring at Mammoth Hot Springs. Canary Spring is named for its bright yellow colors.

 

The white sections are the travertine forms and the orange, yellowish, and brown colors are due to the cyanobacteria living in the springs. The water flowing down the face of the terrace has created multi-colored bands of algae and cyanobacteria.

Yellowstone's Mammoth Hot Spring's Orange Mound Spring is a fascinating colorful natural wonder. Dimensions are ~ 48'x25'x25' so it is good sized. Colors were nice on this rainy afternoon. It is quite tall and impressive.

El Tatio is well known as a geothermal field in Chile, and is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere with about 8% of all geysers in the world and with an elevations of 4,200–4,600 metres, is the highest geyser field in the world. Only Yellowstone in the United States and Dolina Geizerov in Russia are larger and their geysers are taller than these at El Tatio.

Hellisheiði Power Plant, Iceland

 

The Reykjanes peninsula is a region particularly rich in geothermal phenomena due to the high level of volcanic activity. The mid-Atlantic ridge rises to the surface in the Krysuvik region, and there are numerous lava fields, fissures, solfataras, mud pots and other hot springs. This volcanic activity can be seen in particular at the Seltún site.

Mammoth Hot Spring's Canary Spring as seen from Yellowstone's Grand Loop Road. The alkaline flow feeds cyanobacteria which thrive in such environments, creating the mix of colors.

 

In case you wondered, Mammoth Hot Springs deposits about 2 tons of calcium carbonate or travertine limestone per day.

Orakei Korako, New Zealand 12-16-13

Surrounded by geothermal wells and power plant facilities, a geothermal drilling rig sits in the middle of the Reykjanes (Gunnuhver) Geothermal Field , west of Grindavík, Iceland. The lake in the middle of the photo is called by some the “Grey Lagoon”, after the famous Blue Lagoon which is a tourist attraction at a power plant northeast of this location on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Along the left side of the lake shore is a group of hot springs and mudpots called the Power Plant Group.

The Hverir Geothermal field is located near the Krafla crater in the Mývatn Area, northern Iceland. Thermal vents hiss with piping hot steam, black pools bubble with boiling mud, and an intense smell of sulphur fills the air.

A landscape of steaming purple pools and yellow mudpots is a feature of the Námafjall or Hverir geothermal area at Námaskarð in northern Iceland.

Nature's textures fascinate me. Here is a small slice of the colors created by cyanobacteria at Mammoth Hot Springs. Another example of the amazing colors and life-forms one finds at Yellowstone.

Naturally I had to visit Iceland's most famous hot spring, which contains Geysir, which has given its name to geysers all over the world. Unfortunately the original Great Geysir is currently rarely active these days, but there is a smaller geyser nearby that spouts every ten minutes or so. The name Geysir is derived from the Icelandic verb geysa, "to gush", a verb from Old Norse. I parked at the hotel and walked across the street to find a field of sunny wildflowers at the edge of the steamy hot spring area.

Sprengisandir - Laugafell

The hut is in 740 mys, in unexpected oasis in the endless gray sand of Sprengisandur desert. Reason is a geothermal area connected to the Hofsjökull which actually is one mega large volkano couldron filled with glacier. Very nive old bathing pool with a lot of green algae which just makes the bath more helthier.

 

These two bounded into the scene and stopped for a moment for a Yellowstone drink before moving on.

Hiking in the Hveradalir geothermal area in the Kerlingarfjoll mountains, sometimes called the orange mountains. The hikes are easy but there are a lot of steps to climb and descend. They are made of wood and are great because the rhyolite is a bit slippery when wet.

Hveradalir geothermal zone.

Namafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and mud pots. At a depth of 1000 meters the temperature is over 200 degrees C. Cold ground water seeps down to magma intrusions, where it is heated and transforms into steam, and then comes back to the surface. Along with it comes sulphur gases.

 

Iceland has a unique position straddling the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. As a result, it's a geological hotbed of activity. There is quite bit of geothermal area, where the hot spring, hot mud, geothermal steam are seen very often.
