The Flatlanders "Julia"

Another TX outfit that will mean diddly squat in the UK, probably apart from Joe Ely who tends to be known having played with The Clash. They are basically three friends (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock) who have played together on and off for almost half a century. All three guitarists write songs, individually and together. In this video it is Butch Hancock who takes the lead on a love song.

They played Houston Heights Theatre last Saturday night and really did come across as three old friends just having fun.

According too Google Earth the blue fence is no more. All wasteland now.

Sprinkling in a few photos from 8 years ago when we were lucky to visit Malaysia for 5 weeks. We stayed with K's daughter who lived in Kuala Lumpur at the time.

Pier sixty at Clearwater Beach at sunset. Some are totally consumed by catching spanish mackeral off the pier . Some take in the sunset while the couple in the foreground is oblivious to it all.

The former boozer now appears to be apartments whilst The Albert has changed its name. These were two of numerous hostelries along what came to be known as Drunkard's Row, Castletown, Portland. It is the street immediately adjacent to what used to be a very busy naval dockyard, also used by some commercial traffic. Hence it got a lot of business from sailors on shore leave!

Definition : A leat is an artificial channel that supplies water to a watermill.

This one is along the River Piddle at Affpuddle. It seems that every village along Dorset's River Piddle used to have a watermill to process grain. In this photo, the leat in the foreground powered a watermill behind the big tree to the right side. Out of sight in this photo, the mill buildings are now a private house. In the top middle of the photo is the River Piddle itself. Some water still flows through where the water wheel used to be. However, just beyond the tree, before the mill, most of the water cascades down to the river via an open sluice.

The photo is taken from the back of Affpuddle churchyard.

The Lange Straße in the pedestrian zone is the main shopping street.

Today we made the second of our annual summer and winter solstice 'pilgrimages' to Nine Barrow Down.

It didn't look promising for photography until this happened! In the foreground one of the barrows (burial mounds / tumuli) set off the sunbeams out to sea.

Put a skateboard under one end and push from the other!

Apart from upcoming Xmas specials, it was the end of the season at Swanage Railway this week. In this photo, 80078 coasts into Swanage Station passing Eddystone 34028 on the turntable. 30120 peeks out of the engine shed. Having been effectively donated by the National Railway Museum, she is hopefully being positively assessed for an overhaul with a view to a return to working condition.

I've mentioned before how friendly train staff are in America. Look carefully and you can see the engineer / driver returning our wave when he saw photos being taken. As so often there were also a couple of 'hello' blasts on the horn : )

FURX 5520 leads BNSF 2020 as they haul a freight from LyondellBasell's Equistar chemical plant outside Matagorda, TX. It is probably heading for the docks at Corpus Christi.

For the rail aficionados - FURX 5520 is a rebuilt GP38-2 locomotive. The unit was originally built as Norfolk & Western 4140, a GP38AC, in September 1971. The "FU" stands for "First Union" though that company was taken over by Wells Fargo Rail late in 2015. That is a leasing company based in Illinois.

Enveloped by a cloud of steam and smoke, 35018 British India Line has been turned around on the turntable, fed with coal, filled with water, oiled and generally inspected at Yeovil Junction. She is almost ready to continue with her railtour duties of the day.

This rather stunted finger post perfectly illustrated the dilemma of which vowel to use. Local folklore has it that the Victorians changed some village spellings to 'Puddle', due to 'piddle' being an alternative word for 'piss'. Sometimes this is enhanced by suggesting the change came about because a visit from Queen Victoria was due. I'm not so sure. Apparently Puddletown was still "Piddletown" into the 1950s. Additional historical confusion results from a Dorset map of 1610 using the name 'Puddletown'. Moreover, "pudd" is an old English word for marsh, fen or ditch and the River Piddle certainly does flow through very low-lying areas and is prone to occasional flooding.

I much prefer "River Piddle" but whether 'piddle' or 'puddle' both are vastly better than the other alternative "River Trent"!

A typical British Bank Holiday / Public Holiday with gales and rain. A good day to make marmalade and end up with nine jars : )

We had seen this or a sister ship Globemaster at a considerable distance on previous days. However, we were completely unprepared for this massive beast to quietly appear over the rooftops climbing out of Amarillo Airport. I snatched at the shot hence the rubbish photo.

The unidentified frame belongs to the 58th Airlift Squadron out of Altus AFB Oklahoma. The base specialises in training pilots for airlift and airdrop ops.

Our flickr aircraft bods are welcome to update and / or correct the above information about what I think is a C17 Globemaster 111.

Edit : Thanks to Rob for identifying the frame as 01-0190.
