A look back to spectacular mountain scenery in Norway, June 2017. I think this is known as the Hurrungane group in the Jotunheimen National Park near Skjolden......but I stand to be corrected.

Coldplay "Adventures of a Lifetime"

There are quite a few 'lost' villages in Dorset. Knowlton is marked by the church still standing whilst there are no really old houses nearby. However, aerial photography has revealed that the settlement used to be a couple of hundred metres away down along the River. It is out of sight behind and below the far earth embankment.

An earth embankment around the church I hear you say?? Made of chalk rubble, it is more clearly seen in the photo below and encircles the church and is most unusual. I have seen plenty of ancient banks and ditches and plenty of very old churches. However, i don't think I've ever seen the two together before.

It seems that it is a very ancient feature, pre-dating the church itself which is usually described as 'Norman' and dating from 12th century. However, at least one of the windows is Anglo-Saxon in shape (around 400 - 1000 AD) so maybe the Normans added to an existing structure? The surrounding 'henge' is Neolithic and roughly dates from 2000 - 3000BC. There seems little doubt that the Christian church will have visibly symbolised moving from paganism to Christianity. Nobody is quite sure what the henge was for but in this instance it seems very unlikely to have been defensive. One suggestion is that is where Druids will have gathered for ceremonies.

Hadrian's Library in Athens, next to Monastiraki Underground Station.

It was built in A.D. 132 by emperor Hadrian, was destroyed by the Herulae in A.D. 267, and was subsequently incorporated into the Late Roman fortification wall. It was repaired by the Roman eparchus Herculius in A.D. 412, and in the 5th century the quatrefoil building of the Early Christian church was constructed in the centre of the peristyle court. After its destruction, a three-aisled basilica was erected on its ruins in the 7th century, which was in turn superseded by the single-aisled church of Megale Panaghia, in the 11th century.

During the Turkish occupation it became the seat of the Voevode (Governor) and in 1835, the barracks of king Otho were erected in the place of the Voevodalik.

This year's tomatoes are finally being harvested and should last well into September. There should also be enough to make and freeze pasta sauce for winter. .

Dirt Road found on the Lake Ranch, Clifton, Texas

I had to go to Sheffield yesterday on business. I couldn't resist a trip to Castleton for lunch because I remember that the views over that way are stunning. But I'd forgotten just how good they are.

I've no idea how far along the road I was when I took this. Still in Yorkshire, I think - but it's Derbyshire you're looking at. (I've marked it on the map.... still not sure where the boundary is)

My, but it's beautiful!

A fountain and two large restaurants invite you to linger; I counted at least eight more in the center of Appenzell - but how many are still open?

Another look at the late winter / very early spring display of snowdrops. This one is in the churchyard of the former Church of Holy Trinity, Turners Puddle, aka as Toner's Puddle or Piddle. The redundant church is a Grade 11 listed building. As far as I know it is now in private hands, owned and maintained by the local country estate.

This fine work is above the booking hall of the old part of Gent-Sint-Pieters station, Flanders. I presume it was advertising rail services to and from Oostende / Ostende. From there it used to be possible to catch a ferry to Dover. Once that bit the dust, in the final years of operation you could instead go to Ramsgate. Apparently that service also ended in 1997, closing a 151 year span of Ooostende-Enland ferry links.
