George is my teddy bear. he's not all that old or anything, but he's very special. In 1993, when I was 47 years old, I located my birth mother's family and went to visit them in California. My mother died 11 years prior to my finding the family, but her sister, my Aunt Evelyn, and her husband, my Uncle Jack became major people in my life.

The first trip I made to California was for a little over three weeks, and at some point very early in my visit, we were in a TJ Maxx store in Northridge, CA, and they had this wonderful display of these little brown Teddies. Believe it or not, I never had a Teddy Bear as a child!!! I had lots of other stuffies, but never a Teddy. My uncle saw me holding the bear and he asked me if it reminded me of one i had as a child. When I told him I didn't have one, he bought this one for me. It became something of a companion for me, and he flew home with me in my sewing bag!!

I named him "George" after a friend who was instrumental in helping me find the family.

Overlooking the Niagara River, Fort George was built between 1796 and 1802. This fortification served as the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army during the War of 1812, and played a pivotal role in the defence of Upper Canada. Fort George saw action during the Battle of Queenston Heights, was destroyed and captured by the Americans during the Battle of Fort George, and was reclaimed by the British seven months later.

The 41st (Welch) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, formed in 1719 and amalgamated into The Welch Regiment in 1881.

The 41st regiment served with distinction in Canada during the War of 1812 where it gained more battle honours than any other British unit during that period.

Meet George – a wonderful homeless man I met this past Sunday afternoon in DC. I came across him by asking him where I could get some cigarettes around where he was. He pointed me towards a CVS up the street – I asked him if he wanted anything while I was up there, he reluctantly said he would like some soup, but probably thought I would just get on my way after I got what I needed from the store. I came back with 4 cans of soup and gave him half my pack of cigs for his help, and in return, I received the most generous and heartfelt smile I had seen in some time. George is from South Carolina and has has three beautiful girls (he showed me pictures of them). I noticed him massaging his lower left rib cage and asked him about it. He told me that another homeless man attacked him because he did not want him pan-handling in his area. I spent about a good 45 minutes talking with him before I left. He was kind enough let me take some shots of him.

George Little (1878 - 1955) founded the town in 1905, when he staked his claim to the land that would later become Terrace. In what was a prudent and far-sighted move, Little gave some of his land to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway company, which established a railway station there, rather than further down the line at Kitsumkalem. George originally named the new community "Littleton". However, as there was already a Littleton in New Brunswick, the railway had George choose a new name. The name "Terrace" was chosen because of the escarpment on the north side of the town, which is locally referred to as "The Bench". Terrace was incorporated in 1927.

George Little built this house in 1914 a few blocks from where it now sits. In fact, the house was relocated several times. In 2003, the house was donated to the city, after which time it was renovated and moved to its current location at the geographic centre of the city. The house now serves as a museum, artists’ studio space, crafts store, and train station.
