Akio Makigawa (1948-1999)
"Untitled" 1999
- corten steel.
Born in Japan, Akio Makigawa moved to Australia in 1974. He lived and worked in Melbourne until his early death in 1999. Makigawa's work was strongly influenced by the Zen Buddhist tradition. The objects of his creation are both physically PRESENT and STILL (a deep tranquility).

That poor bird entered the Pantheon and kept flying in circle for a while...I was sorry for its disorientation but it worked as a great composition element! ;)
I reduced this architectural detail to basic geometric forms, creating an abstract composition that plays with color and line. The vibrant turquoise sky adds dramatic contrast to the golden steps.
Dormant building site with expensive new concrete forms placed to stop people from parking outside their place of work.

Controlled highkey exposure. Simple white rings used to test minimalism, composition, and light distribution.
The round shape is a refelction from a mirror.

Homeless in London 2018.
As the nights grow colder the homeless problem is much more evident.

Brutalist concrete building with sharp geometric forms reflected in a still pool, captured in high-contrast black-and-white to emphasize texture, symmetry, light and shadow for a minimalist, dramatic urban composition.

Geometric Shapes - Wood and Stone. I built this mantel from reclaimed wood from a building that was from the 1930's in downtown Seattle.
Hanging high above the old city council chamber in Tønsberg, this circular lamp becomes pure abstraction when seen from directly below. The warm diffusion and soft gradients turn a functional light source into a floating disc of calm geometry, glowing quietly in the vast height of the historic room. Form, color and symmetry merge into a minimalist moment suspended in mid‑air.
Fun fact: The old bystyresal in Tønsberg has unusually tall ceilings—nearly two storeys—giving its pendant lamps a natural spotlight effect when viewed straight up, transforming them into almost celestial shapes.
.... 'Equilibrium' is Okuda's tallest mural yet and also his first opportunity to showcase his work in Toronto, located at the Parkside Student Residence Building at Carlton and Jarvis streets. Okuda’s signature geometric shapes and colorful pop-surrealism style, explores themes such as unity, knowledge, nature, diversity, and innovation ....
The eye-catching geometric shapes of the concrete cubes of Bangor Marina's breakwater, County Down, Northern Ireland.
(Photo was run through a few post-effects - HDR, oils filter, etc - with a pleasing end result - geometric meets organic.)
Everyone sees things in their own way. What do you see? Please share in the comments, so we can see it too. :)
This Morning Mary loves when visitors to Ireland who have not been here before come calling so that they can be taken to see the wonders of Newgrange! The workmanship on the enormous stones would be impressive in today's context but given that they were carried out more than 5,000 years ago they are phenomenal!
This shot is very effective in its capture of the fine detail of this stone on the inside of the tomb chamber.

WEEK 22 - Story: Geometric Shapes
Triangles, squares, and circles. They are all very strong compositional elements in an image. Find a way to use geometric shapes in your storytelling.
