Repeated eruption of fluid basaltic lavas built up layers several hundred meters thick. Accompanying stresses and stretches produced numerous dykes like this one, which is pointing to the isle of Rum. According to ‘The Geology of Eigg’, the term 'dyke' originates from instances where vertical basalt dykes have been intruded into soft sediments or lavas, and erosion leaves them standing proud. However, at Laig Bay, where this photo was taken, the reverse is the case: the most resistant rocks are the baked sandstones of the dyke margins; the sandstones away from the dykes are of intermediate resistance, and the most eroded rocks are the basalt dykes themselves.

The layers of sandstone, mudstone, and igneous rock in the low coastal cliffs on the north coast of Donegal Bay give the appearance of being "carved" with long grooves, deep pits, troughs and undulating dips in the cliff face...creating cubed and platform like features. This shaping process is a natural phenomenon caused by continuous repetitive motion of strong wind abrasion and high tides wearing away the stone for thousands of years. The softer sedimentary stone is worn away faster in layered formations, leaving pits, bands and grooves. This is known as ventifaction...and creates some amazing natural sculptural patterns in these ancient cliffs.

Also known as the Devil's Punchbowl, legend has it that the giant Wade and his wife Bell had a massive argument and in temper he picked up a fistful of soil (the Hole of Horcum) and then threw it at his wife, missing her, whereby it landed and formed Blakey Ridge.

On the southern boundary of the North Yorkshire Moors, the Hole of Horcum is a natural amphitheatre a quarter of a mile wide, a mile long and 400 feet deep.
