This is a brilliant walk, up by Blackridge. I'll bring the binoculars for the birds the next time. A great resource for geography teachers as well.

"Rocks Zoo", there are enormous rocks in unique shapes, somehow can be seen as animals, if you have enough imagination !

History

Old view from the south

A late Romanesque, L-shaped building from the period after 1235 forms the core structure of Gozzoburg with a high entry and three preserved arched windows. After the acquisition of this house by the Kremser city judge Gozzo of Krems in the late forties of the 13th Century, the original building was expanded in three phases to a respectable palace. The first written mention of the name followed in 1258, in 1267 took place the inauguration of the newly built St. Catherine's Chapel.

In 1320 the castle became part of the property of the Habsburgs, in the 15th Century it was often pledged. In 1477, during a siege of the city by the troops of Matthias Corvinus, the castle was damaged, rebuilt in the years 1484-1487.

In the 19th Century, the tower of the castle was demolished. From 1958 to 1964, an extensive renovation of the building followed. An overhaul and comprehensive revitalization of the castle was completed to a large extent in the summer of 2007, since 21st September 2007, the city palace of the citizen Gozzo now for the first time within the scope of guided tours to the public is accessible. In the revitalization the probably the best-preserved and oldest secular frescoes in Central Europe were discovered. Since 2007, works was still running for the exploration and revitalization of the chapel rooms of the castle (Chapel of Saint Catherine and small chapel).

The revitalized Gozzoburg in 2009 as a model for the preservation of cultural heritage and exemplary restoration was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize.

In the Gozzoburg the Lower Austrian Conservatory Department of the Federal Monuments Office is located.
