SCHRÖDINGER'S CAT:
A cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor (e.g. Geiger counter) detects radioactivity (i.e. a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison, which kills the cat.
The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of when exactly quantum superposition ends and reality collapses into one possibility or the other.

hot-pink tanks. Coop bought this crazy old geiger counter at a swap meet for
like $20! RTFM.

a 1940's aircraft switch with radium paint, showing about 0.15 mr/hr on my vintage Geiger counter, much of it gamma rays. In the 1920's a radioactive paperweight, the Bioray, was sold legally in the U.S.; from the ad material: "with Bioray on one's desk or at one's bedside one can obtain a steady flow of gamma rays continually, without any fuss or bother..." Yikes.

Refurbished geiger counter rescued from the trash heap in a lab. Probe was busted but I found a good deal on some end window tubes that perfectly fit the probe.
This item is for sale as I have other counters that do the same.
