Do you know anything about it? Hidden in a quiet corner of the Lakshore East Park this private school caught my eye a while ago. It was a pleasant discovery and it took me some time to decide how to photograph it. I’m really loving the IR Chrome look for this scene and I’m enjoying showcasing some less familiar parts of this town. What do you think?

Pauatahanui Bird Sanctuary ("Pawa-taha-nui"), approximately 40 kilometres north of New Zealand's capitol Wellington, didn't have much in the way of bird life on this particular morning, but tucked away in a corner of the Reserve was this little Gem...

• People usually know me as the quiet woman, the shy one who stays within her small circle. I observe more than I speak. My husband, on the other hand, has always been the social one: outgoing, generous, always ready to help. Where he is calm, I am fire. Where he speaks, I think.

• Behind every king, there is a queen and we are proof of that. Ideas come to me out of nowhere, and he’s the one who brings them to life. We work as a team. I’m fiercely protective of him and our children, but I trust him to handle the world, because he is the calmest man I’ve ever known. If it were up to me alone? Oh, I’d turn the whole house upside down without a second thought.

• I may be quiet, but I see everything. I like to look at life from another angle, supervising my surroundings in silence, always aware.

• My small family is my greatest priority. We have two beautiful daughters whom we love beyond words. To them, we offer a love that is unique, responsible, and loyal something rare these days. We understand that behind every face, every avatar, there is a human being with feelings, and that real connection grows stronger with care and time.

• I work for what is best for all of us, and I will continue to give my best to each one of them. We are here to learn from one another, and that is what makes us a family. It’s in the little moments; the quiet laughs, the shared looks that our forever memories are made. It’s just us, and for them I’m their Queen.

Photographing some of the most remote and spectacular locations is our expertise. And our workshop participants absolutely love it! This particular evening was certainly one we will all remember. It was stormy and rainy as we made our way out to one of shooting locations on our Hidden Gems Workshop this year. When the storm started to break, we stopped momentarily to photograph a brilliant rainbow behind us. As we loaded back up, a large bull elk came running full speed right in front of us, rimmed by soft light and drizzle. It was almost magical! We then had so much fun rallying through mud puddles as water sprayed all around our 4x4 vehicle. When we got to the overlook, we knew sunset was going to be epic. Wouldn't you agree?

Took me only 7 years to go see this California Coast gem. Definitely lives up to the hype!

Known as "Pugin's Gem", St Giles' Church - built by Augustus Pugin - is the architect's own tribute to inner peace and serenity and a design wonder of the Gothic Revival - being opened just over 150 years ago.

Through the generosity of John Talbot, the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury (the Lord of the Manor at Alton Towers - now one of the country's most famous theme parks and just up the road!), Augustus Welby Pugin was commissioned to design and build a church that would have no rival. To achieve this, the Earl placed unlimited means at Pugin's disposal.

The Church itself was opened and consecrated on the 31st August 1846. The very next day the First Solemn Mass was celebrated amid great pomp and splendour. Historical records tell us that eight carriages bearing the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury and their guests left Alton Towers(when it was a stately home) for the drive to Cheadle. Among the guests were eight Deacons, 53 Priests, 13 Bishops and two Archbishops.

Unfortunately, the 16th Earl died before the Church could be endowed and his heir, the 17th Earl died only four years later. The 18th Earl was not a Roman Catholic and so the upkeep and maintenance of the Church has since fallen upon the parishioners and townspeople of Cheadle.

Text from tinterweb!

Bagan, located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, is home to the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world with many dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The shape and construction of each building is highly significant in Buddhism with each component part taking on spiritual meaning.

With regards to tour comparison between this immense archeological site and the other significant archeological gem of Southeast Asia, the Angkor sites, this analogy may be helpful:

Angkor ruins are like a Chinese Lauriat banquet where food is presented in spectacular servings with a suspenseful wait between items which are hidden beneath curtains of forests. On the other hand, Bagan is served in Spanish Tapas style, the ingredients exposed to the customer and shown in small bite-size servings, with the next attraction close and visible at hand, in shorter intervals.

Another analogy between Angkor and Bagan Sites when distinguishing temple structures is through their stupa and spire shapes.

What makes the temples look romantic is the process of graceful aging. For some reason, there are no windbreakers around as shown by the barren, desert-dry mountain range to the west past the river, spinning occasional micro twisters that spawn loose dust particles everywhere from the eroded earth to the structures. This phenomenon had peeled off so much the stucco coating of the temples to reveal the brick structural blocks with its rusty, reddish, and sometimes golden brown-like patina when hit by the sun's rays.

Erosion is a significant threat to this area, not only the wind chipping away the buildings' plastering but also water from the mighty Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River threatens the riverbanks. The strong river current has already washed away half of the area of Old Bagan. It used to be a rectangular-shaped piece of enclave protected by a perimeter wall. Now what remains is roughly the triangular eastern half part.

Other images of Bagan which make a lasting impression to tourists aside from the spire-fringed skyline; stupas sporting that tumbledown look yet crowned with glitter-studded golden miter-like sikaras; the ubiquitous pair of ferocious stone lions flanking a temple's door; the spiky and lacy eave fascia woodcarvings lining a monastery's ascending tiers of roofs; tall palmyras or toddy palms with willowy trunks, bougainvilleas, exotic cotton trees, and the likes bringing life to the arid landscape and abandoned ruins; squirrels playfully and acrobatically scampering on the walls and pediments of temples; horse drawn carriages lazily carrying drop-jawed tourists; sleepy moving grandfather's bullock carts grinding on a dust-choked trail; not to mention the garbage left around, stray dogs loitering, longyi clad men spitting betel chews in copious amounts everywhere, overgrown weeds and the pestering dust.

We sure have been having fun on the Hidden Gems of the Southwest Workshop! In addition to emblematic views like this one, we got to access to some seldom photographed places. We are doing it again OCT 7-12, perfectly timed to capture the full moon! One spot just opened up:

For our Joy and the Glory of Jesus, through whom all things were made (1 Thessalonians 5:16 & John 1:3)

Southern Arizona offers many springtime treats to those birders who visit, but few more beautiful than this one. The blue-throated mountain-gem, actually a large hummingbird (about 3X the size of the Ruby-throated hummingbird), exhibits beauty in its flight and that identifiable magnificent blue throat. Last year, when visiting the area, I had hoped to come across them, and that we did. Having a limited distribution in North America, primarily in Mexico, they also breed in SE AZ, SW NM, and southern TX. Of interest to note, the blue-throated mountain-gem does not perform an aerial display, using different vocalizations to attract mates and defend its territory. I think it's a gem indeed. Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend ahead.

Silent Raindrops

Just seven and half kilometers south of Fira, a different side of Santorini emerges, an aspect that harkens back to the picturesque Greek villages of yesteryear. Here, the pace of life is more relaxed; cats stroll in the alleys, families dress up in their Sunday best to go to church, and piano lessons can be heard through the open windows of the cultural society. The main square, with its tall pine trees and quaint little coffee shops, is the focal point for socializing and entertainment. Regardless of the season, its busiest time is noon, when people gather for ouzo or Santorinian beer accompanied by excellent local meze.

This is Pyrgos, the largest preserved village on Santorini and the island’s former capital. Strategically built in the heart of the pre-volcanic hinterland and at the foot of Mt Profitis Ilias, Pyrgos affords panoramic views. Yet, located that bit further from the famous caldera, it has been spared the terraces, balconies, infinity pools and master suites that adorn the glossy covers of tourist magazines the world over. Pyrgos is not swamped by sunset spotters, nor is it the first choice among the hordes of cruise-ship passengers. Its charm is different: more subdued, less picture-perfect, little advertised.

Ask the locals what the difference is between Pyrgos and the rest of the island in terms of social profile, and you’ll get conflicting answers. For some, it’s that the villagers are more cultivated and more united among themselves, while for others, it’s that its location has kept the village relatively untouched – at least for now – by the tourist industry that is flourishing on the island.

It is a fact, however, that on Palm Sunday, as I was going up to the top of the medieval Kasteli (castle), I was overcome with emotion. The historic Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (1660), one of Santorini’s largest and most important places of worship, was welcoming the faithful for the first time after a lengthy restoration: its masterful pulpit and intricate woodcarved altarpiece have been fully restored after centuries of wear and tear.

If you feel inclined to visit Pyrgos, get your climbing shoes on. This is the only way to explore the Pyrgos Kasteli, the best preserved of the five Venetian castles that once adorned the island. Don’t worry about getting lost; just head uphill from the main square and you’ll find it, a fortress hamlet that started life as a monastery and grew in size after the arrival of the Venetians at the beginning of the 13th century.
