This is an entrance to the federal district court in Knoxville named for former Tennessee senator Howard Baker. The complex, constructed entirely in red brick, appears to be relatively new but is very traditional in style.
Totnes North Gate has ivy climbing up the inside of the arch and the wall either side has plants growing in the cracks.

The Black Gate - The Castle is a medieval fortification in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which gave the City of Newcastle its name. The most prominent remaining structures on the site are the Castle Keep, the castle's main fortified stone tower, and the the Black Gate, its fortified gatehouse.
Use of the site for defensive purposes dates from Roman times, when it housed a fort and settlement called Pons Aelius, guarding a bridge over the River Tyne. In 1080, a wooden motte and bailey style castle was built on the site of the Roman fort, which was the 'New Castle upon Tyne'. It was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William I (William the Conqueror), having returned south from a campaign against Malcolm III of Scotland. The stone Castle Keep was built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II on the site of Curthose's castle. The Black Gate was added between 1247 and 1250 by Henry III. - from Wikipedia
Belmont Gate Box is located in Starbeck and controls the Level Crossing that it is on. It has a frame of 5 levers and controls just one Semaphore signal. It is the smallest box on the Harrogate Line although it is built to the same design as the boxes at Cattal, Marston Moor and Poppleton it was built slightly taller and narrower than the standard design which is why it has a square base.
Also note that its gabled roof is built at a right angle to the line whereas it is standard for gabled roofs of signal boxes to be parallel with the line.
The wall containing the Water of Leith is lower on this side of the flood gates. In the event of high water the flood gates will be closed and this part of the roadway (etc) will be flooded. The other side will be dry, provided the water doesn't get higher than the wall on that side, provided the flood gate provides a good seal, provided they remembered to disconnect the drains, etc..
