The two towers that remain of the 14th century Viru Gate entrance into old town Tallinn, Estonia.
Back in the 16th century, Tallinn (then called Reval) was a walled city, surrounded by a 2.4 km long and 3 meter thick wall that was between 14 and 16 meters tall. Along this wall were 46 defensive towers. The wall remained intact until 1825, but subsequent growth caused parts of the wall to be demolished and today just 1.9 km and 20 defensive towers remain.

Noon Gate located in front of the Throne Palace and facing the Flag Tower, serves as the main entrance to the old Imperial City of Hue. Built in 1837 under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang (1820-40) of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 – 1945), the structure seriously damaged during the decades of wars against the French and Americans. It is currently undergoing a facelift and will be completed in 2015.
Alamgiri Gate in front of the Lahore fort Pakistan. The Alamgiri Gate built in 1673 A.D., is the main entrance to the Lahore Fort in present day Lahore, Pakistan. It was constructed to face west towards the Badshahi Mosque in the days of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The monumental gateway is an imposing vestibule flanked by two semi-circular bastions that have boldly fluted shafts and lotus petalled bases and are crowned with domed pavilions.
The huge arched entrance in the center was designed to allow the emperor's elephant mounted caravan to pass through. It leads to the central square hall having deep arched recesses on the east and north and a staircase leading to the upper storey buildings. The archway on the south leads to interior of the fort.
The source of the name is that the gate merely kisses (touches) the enclosure either side, rather than needing to be securely latched.
A common folk source is that the name comes from a traditional game played when more than one person is passing through a kissing gate. In order for one person to pass fully through the gate, they have to close it to the next person. At this point, when the two are on either side of the gate, the person in front refuses entry to the second person until presented with a kiss.
In some circles it is considered good form for everyone passing through a kissing gate to exchange kisses in this way ... provided all parties are sufficiently friendly with each other !!!! :)
