Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. It has a population of about 11 million and a metropolitan population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India. Such is the nature of urban expansion in Delhi that its growth has expanded beyond the NCT to incorporate towns in neighbouring states and at its largest extent can count a population of about 25 million residents as of 2014.

The NCT and its urban region have been given the special status of National Capital Region (NCR). The NCR includes the several neighbouring cities. A union territory, the political administration of the NCT of Delhi today more closely resembles that of a state of India, with its own legislature, high court and an executive council of ministers headed by a Chief Minister. New Delhi is jointly administered by the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi, and is the capital of the NCT of Delhi.

Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.

The India Gate, originally called the All India War Memorial, is a war memorial located astride the Rajpath, on the eastern edge of the ‘ceremonial axis’ of New Delhi, formerly called Kingsway. India gate is a memorial to 82,000 soldiers of the undivided British Indian Army who died in the period 1914–21 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Near and the Far East, and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. 13,300 servicemen's names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. The India Gate, even though a war memorial, evokes the architectural style of the triumphal arch like the Arch of Constantine, outside the Colosseum in Rome, and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Gateway of India in Bombay. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

In 1971, following the Bangladesh Liberation war, a small simple structure, consisting of a black marble plinth, with reversed rifle, capped by war helmet, bounded by four eternal flames, was built beneath the soaring Memorial Archway. This structure, called Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the Flame of the Immortal Soldier, since 1971 has served as India’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

A capture during the winter of 2009. This was taken in Broek in Waterland which is slightly North East of Amsterdam.

Plots of land across the Netherlands, but especially in this area are surrounded by small drainage ditches and canals. These act as a natural barrier for livestock. All the owner has to do is to install farm gates between parcels of land to ensure his livestock do not stray. It's quite a pretty site as you drive past huge swathes of countryside only partitioned by gates with no fences to be seen.

So, this is my vision of the Black Gate. I know that the official Lego set is different and it is an awesome replica of the gate from the movie, but I see the gate as a semicircular one, so if you're standing in front of the gate doors, it looks like the gate itself will consume you.

Start of the week, and we're living in five star luxury overlooking Michigan Avenue here in Chicago.

We both went to bed before ten the night previously, and so we were both awake at about five, laying in bed watching the light traffic cast shadows on the ceiling of our room.

And another packed day ahead, this time with added art.

We get up at six, and its still dark outside, but the traffic is jumping and horns of the cars are a honking.

Welcome to the working week.

We were up, showered, dressed and waiting in line to Starbucks by half seven, another spiced pumpkin latte was good enough for us, but we had to sit outside again as there are so few chairs to on inside. I feed the small family of sparrows with left over granola, and they are very happy with that situation, each carrying away their sugary nugget of food into nearby trees to try to eat.

We walk down Michigan, over the Chicago River, past row upon row of impressive classical skyscrapers, and Trump's penis extension of a building. It is a vulgar and classless thing, which makes sense.

Down Michigan, until we reach the park near to the museum, where we turn inland to find a place for breakfast. We come across an independent coffee house, have two Queen Bee coffees, vanilla honey roast or something. Is nice, but sweet.

After drinking and eating, we walk back to Michigan, cross over and go into the park to hunt for the Sky Gate, a huge silvery bean shaped sculture that is very reflective. I hoped to be early enough so there would be few others about.

Some luck.

Everyone's a photographer these days, but the poor shots I take are more than made up (yeah, right) by the look of joy on the people around me's faces, as they try to take shots of the clear blue sky and huge buildings reflected in the sculpture's surface.

I take shots from all angles, but the truth is, none are that good.

Anyway, I spy some kind of area just beyond with sweeping, arcing supports for lights, that might be a winner? I snap that too.

Mainz-Bretzenheim, Germany – 12-14MAY2014:

When I got up from my arrival nap, I walked from the hotel to the Altmünsterkirche (a Münster in Germany – the English name is Minster – is a church of great importance; this one started in the 8th century, a Benedictine Abbey, then a Cistercian one, eventually becoming a pilgrimage church), the 2nd time I came to their church (cf. Evening & Morning in Mainz – 6OCT2013), then to Fritz Gerber at Fichteplatz; we walked to his wife’s grave in Mainz-Bretzenheim, the rose petals strewn by his children and grandchildren from her burial service this past weekend still fresh. We added new flowers, then went downtown to the Tuesday evening prayer group at St. John’s church (Evangelische Sankt Johannisgemeinde).

The beginning of last July I had met the Gerbers, Dina, and others at this church on my first crew layover in Mainz after about a decade, changing cities back again from Frankfurt.

Afterwards Dina had invited me for supper. I went alongside her motorized wheelchair, amazed how she negotiated curbs and construction areas, also at her independence in life, her talent, and creativity. I enjoyed dinner & our visit tremendously. Dina accompanied me to the hotel, giving me a fascinating Old Town tour on the way – and a new perspective on getting out and about, and how that can work. In the 2nd floor hotel lobby I met up with 4 of our crew ending the evening in great spirits.

Yesterday I walked about 7 miles in Mainz in brisk 50-degree Fahrenheit windy weather with intermittent spring showers on the heels of a mild winter that never dipped down to the freezing point. Today with the North Atlantic behind us, we got re-routed around thunderstorms; 9 hours 52 minutes after leaving Frankfurt we arrived in sunny, 83⁰ F Charlotte with more thunderstorms on the way, along with flash flood and tornado warnings.
