Guess who had the job of opening and closing all the gates to and from work on Monday. This was taken on our way to Mudross Hut mining site on Mulyungarie Station in the far north east of South Australia.
The gate to Kongōbu-ji temple is the oldest building at the temple; it was constructed in 1593.
Unlike gates of secular buildings, most temple and shrine gates are purely symbolic elements of liminality (the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete), as they cannot be completely closed and just mark the transition between the mundane and the sacred.
In the past, the only people who could enter and exit from this front gate were the emperor, royalty, and the chief priests of Koyasan.
Kongōbu-ji is the historic ecclesiastic head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism on Mount Kōya.
The temple was first constructed as Seigan-ji Temple in 1593 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the death of his mother, rebuilt in 1861, and given its present name in 1869.

It is said that in 1845 Spring Heeled Jack was seen at Jacob’s Island, Bermondsey, a disease ridden slum of decaying houses linked by wooden bridges across stinking ditches.
Jack was said to have cornered a 13 year old prostitute named Maria Davis on a bridge over Folly Ditch. He threw her into the stinking, muddy filth below. The girl screamed horribly as the slimy waters consumed her. Police dragged the ditch and found the poor girl’s body. The verdict was one of death by misadventure, but the inhabitants of the area branded Jack as the murderer.
