Joel Meyerowitz defined the GASP moment: "We all experience it. Those moments when we gasp and say, Oh, look at that. Maybe it's nothing more than the way a shadow glides across a face, but in that split second, when you realize something truly remarkable is happening and disappearing right in front of you, if you can pass a camera before your eye, you'll tear a piece of time out of the whole, and in a breath, rescue it and give it new meaning." By extension I think we can associate the term with all those situations that surprise you on the street and you have to photograph them. When I have seen this lady walking in the streets in - just - underwear, I didn't exitate a moment to take a picture of her. But, please note: respect is important and I considered important not to reveal her identity.

His pond was highly deoxygenated from the algae in the water so he was really depressed. Looking for attention from me. Koi usually shy at the sight of any silhouette.

This is what I've been waiting for. A foray into the Dark Side of the force.

When Nikon announced the new D500 -- to be released on March 15, I immediately pre-ordered it from Nikon directly. The D500 would not give me any new capabilities, but offered some new technology which might lead to slightly better images of some types. Ultimately it would still be a back-up camera to the D4s, but a substantially better back-up than anything else I own.

Then Nikon -- for reasons undisclosed -- moved the release date back an additional month and a half. I've played that game with Nikon in the past, and was not willing to do it again, so I cancelled the pre-order.

I've lusted after the Canon super macro lens (1x-5x...check out the Flickr groups for that lens) for quite a while. Nikon offers no macro lens of this type.

The fly in the ointment was that to use the Canon lens required a Canon camera. I had toyed with the idea of ordering a Canon body and the super macro lens...just for the very specialty purpose. When Nikon announced its new camera, the Canon idea went waaaay back beyond the back burner.

Nikon's situation -- whatever the problem -- made me re-think the whole thing. It made little sense to spend the money on a camera and one specialty lens. I've never had a long prime lens. Canon's 400mm 5.6 gets rave reviews for wildlife work, is reasonably priced, and is yet another lens for which Nikon does NOT offer a comparable model.

So I went all in (the poker reference is not inappropriate) and ordered Canon's top of the line Prosumer (APS-c) camera...the 7D MKii. And I ordered the two lenses.

It will be an adventure in the beginning. Canon's camera controls and menus are VERY different from Nikon. That is challenge one. The 400m telephoto does not have image stabilization (challenge two) but a number of my other lenses don't have it either, and it has not been an issue. The super macro lens is reputed to be very difficult to use successfully...very narrow depth of field and exposure demands. (challenge three)

And the bottom line is that my NIkons are still my main gear. When I see how well this new stuff works, I'll know when it will be appropriate to take on outings.

I've not shot Canon since my 35mm days four decades ago. First Nikon was the CoolPix 990 in 1999, and every camera since then has been a Nikon.

Now I'm not so much a traitor...or a new force in the dark side...as I am a split personality when camera is in hand.

Last gasp to bloom in the dying days of summer

Can't believe the GM lenses.

When I took the photo the EVF showed that it was very out of focus but when I've checked the photo, it was sharp as a knife blade.

I'm simply impressed!

Old Dodge showing last gasp for the day and life.

The day after we did this shoot - it snowed like crazy :P

Plus shipping, of course. Plus customs duty in case you buy it from abroad.

The Nikon F5 uses a proprietary NiMH battery pack called MN-30. NiMH batteries don't last that long ... chances are they'll no longer take a charge unless you're lucky or you happen to own one that was made late in the production run.

The alternative is to use an also proprietary battery holder that takes eight AA cells. However, you'll find that you'll have to pay through the nose for one of these.

Of course, as long as there will be people who want to use their F5's there will be a market for these battery cases, so although the price I had to pay is outrageous I am quite confident that I will be able to sell it.

After my initial gasp when the bull moose came out of the woods ... I can tell you he had one thing on his mind. He had a smile on his face and he was definitely looking for love. I don't think the cow was, though. She was more intent on breakfast.
