The shadows are getting long as Montana Rail Link's Night Gas Local glides west through the s-curve near Plains, Montana, on a beautiful late afternoon. A pair of SD70ACe's lead the train which includes two centerbeams for Thompson River Lumber.

Taken in Maysville, Kentucky.

I have to wonder what the local gas company thinks of these stenciled decorations on their meters. Interesting that they are all different. Wonder who painted them.

Here some facts about gas stations:

The world’s first gas station is widely considered to have opened in 1905 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. It was established by the Automobile Gasoline Company, a subsidiary of the Shell Oil Company. Before this, gasoline was typically sold at general stores, pharmacies, or even from barrels at blacksmith shops.

This early gas station was a dedicated facility designed specifically to dispense gasoline to automobiles, marking a significant shift in infrastructure for the growing number of car owners. It had a simple hand pump and a large visible storage tank, setting the stage for the evolution of modern fueling stations.

However, another key milestone came in 1913, when the Gulf Refining Company opened what many consider the first modern gas station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This one featured a canopy, uniformed attendants, and paved driveways — elements that would become standard in service stations later on.

So while St. Louis had the earliest form, Gulf’s Pittsburgh station is often credited with pioneering the modern gas station model.

And another fact: Bertha Benz, wife of Karl Benz (inventor of the first practical automobile), made the world’s first long-distance car trip in 1888.

During her journey, she purchased fuel (ligroin, a petroleum solvent) from a pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany. And that again is not too far, from where I live :-) And even closer to my job....

A derelict gas station. Is it post-apoc? Perhaps. I'm not really sure. Just an experiment in terrain and building construction.

This was my unfortunately late entry to the landscape contest, which closed about 3 hours ago. I totally forgot about time zones, so I thought it ended sometime tonight...ahh well, at least it spawned this MOC :)

Enjoy!

EDIT: Sorry for the terrible photoshop, it was hastily done. I'll try again later.

Found these old petrol pumps in a Somerset village called West Chinnock

Out of gasoline, anyway—if you know what I mean.

Apparently there were three of these and the other two were demolished last year. This one was spared as it had ravens nesting on it. A local chap who ran a garage nearby told me that when demand for gas was high it could empty from full in two hours which I find quite mind boggling.

The ravens have moved on now and this one is also scheduled for demolition.

Part of the ring on my gas cooker. We've had it for about 20 years now: it does get cleaned occasionally, but a lot of that muck is welded on pretty thoroughly! I did try an alternate shot for Macro Monday with more moody lighting- it's also in my photostream: let me know which you prefer.

Macro Mondays and the theme of "Triangle".

For this theme I figured that a Toblerone would be a popular choice and after a bit of further consideration I opted for the end of our gas cover key which does have a triangular shaped connector.

I decided to try a little light painting with my Maglite torch and this proved to be tricky as at first I was trying to draw an outline around the key but in the end I decided to paint streaks in the background.

I used flash to light the key itself and after loading the key image and 5 streak images into photoshop I stacked them and used the lighten blending mode. Then I added a hue/sat adjustment layer to each streak layer and changed the colour of the streaks.

Montana Rail Link's Gas Local heads east underneath the classic Northern Pacific Cantilever signal bridge in Plains, Montana, on MRL's 4th Subdivision. Unfortunately, the days of anything but SD70ACe's leading this train are probably gone. Montana Rail Link SD40-2XR (rebuilt SD40) leading this train is former Burlington Northern 6301.

I got a lot of mileage out of this great old gas station in the tiny town of Yermo, California. Like every other defunct building I've shot, I try to imagine what this looked like back in the day. On this night, the moon lit the grounds leaving a shadowed interior ready for light painting.

An old rusty gas bottle discarded with the trash in my neighbourhood. The yellow-orange colour is from the vibrant paint, which is mostly peeling off the rusty body. I took a couple of quick shots of this bottle, and I quite like them. I think I will go and rescue it from the trash heap, because I feel like there are a few more photos in it, I just didn't have time to capture them.
