During the time of locally generated town gas from coal distillation, the 'town' or 'coal' gas was stored in metal gas holders often incorrectly called 'gasometers'..
An inner bottomless tank contains the gas and it rises and falls on a water seal. Tracks on the six upright pillars guide the tank. In any city or town they would dominate the skyline. This one at Fakenham, Norfolk, is a relatively tiny version enough for a small town and built in 1888.

I hadn't seen something like this before, but I found this gas station for motor boats exciting :-). You can not only refuel your boat from the water, cars can also refuel at this gas station.

If you need gas, don't drive to Darwin. It used to be a thriving town but now only about 30 people live there among the ruins of a ghost town. The residents are mostly artistic types seeking life without constraints of modern civilization.

A very small gas-bottle hooked on the edge of a large round tank that has seen better days and needs to be duct taped together at the top. Found in an empty block being used as a store or dump, I can't decide which.
The Day Gas seen at Plains, MT under a cantilever. Things are progressing for the BNSF takeover with new vaders being put up at many places, I'm sure these won't be too long for the world. 9/3/22

The sun sets on the old gas works. Although it has not been used to produce gas from coal since the 1970s, it still retains a presence across the road from the City Park.
The vertical retort building was where methane gas was produced from coal. This gas was then stored in the gasometer. Only the frame of that still exists in the foreground.

The Australian Imperial Force experienced gas attacks in most actions on the Western Front.
Gas bombardment of a wood at Messines led to 1,374 casualties, of which 310 were fatal.
Gas masks saved lives but also caused fatalities. They were extremely uncomfortable and hampered the movement of the men, inducing fatigue, disorientation and confusion.

This abandoned gas station is located in Dodson, Oregon, along the Historic Columbia River Highway. Named for Ira Dodson, who was an early settler in the area, Dodson was the site of the McGowan salmon cannery and a fish wheel c. 1900.
Update: I photographed this in October of 2020. A couple days ago there was a massive landslide in the area. It swept over the main highway and a passing motorist who's still buried under 12 feet of mud and debris. It's not the first time Dodson's suffered from landslides. In February 1996 a series of massive debris flows occurred destroying homes and blocking the railroad and highway for several days. The amount of rain that hit the Dodson territory this past week was impressive.

MRL's Night Gas turn from Missoula to Thompson Falls, MT hits track speed as it cruises west out of Arlee on the 10th Subdivision. Haze from western wildfires works to obscure the mountain range in the background.
With the huge gas storage facility at Grain on the horizon and the pylons marching across the fields to the E.ON combined heat and power station 66004 Climate Hero trailing its rake of blue grey stock looks rather insignificant as the punters on the Doctor Syn railtour, 1Z41, are treated to a run down the branch.
The Day Gas rolls eastward on the 10th Sub east of Perma, MT with BNSF 9823 sporting its Executive “cream and green” paint. It was nice to finally bag an executive mac leader and it being a pair of mac’s didn’t hurt either.
I think I prefer the vertical composition. A little more ominous feel that goes well with the old gas works.

To be able to look at an ordinary scene and see the beauty in its structure and inherent design.
I’m still chasing Stephen Shore and the transparency and 2D flatness of space.
In this case I forced myself to choose only one angle in which to shoot this station. Now, Stephen Shore was forced by the fact he was using 8x10 color negatives which cost a lot to develop and print. In my case I wanted to follow that rule. And here it is. Thanks
Though these gas pumps are no longer in use, they provide a great glimpse back into a time many of us remember, when things seemed a lot simpler.
I can still recall the first time I saw a pump your own gas station in Michigan! They had yet to hit Florida, and I was amazed that people were allowed to fill their own tanks! Now it's hard to find a station where you DON'T.
. . . are the limited choices here at night . . . and the ice box is locked.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations
One of seven remaining gas holders in West Ham (Newham) but named after the nearby area of Bromley-By-Bow in Tower Hamlets. They are grade II listed.
In July this year, Newham Council granted planning permission for 2,200 new homes to be built on the site, with all seven remaining gasholders to be retained.
Montana Rail Link's Day Gas departs Thompson Falls on 12/30/2023 bound for Missoula. To the east they will branch off of the 4th Sub and onto the 10th Sub for the remainder of the trip.
Since my trip, the MRL power and spacer cars have disappeared from this location and soon the tricolor lights which replaced the semaphores, will also disappear.
