A view from one of the trails at Garner State Park in Texas.

We took a little trip to Garner State Park near Leakey, Texas during April 2021. This old bald cypress tree had an opening big enough for my husband to stand inside. In spite of that, the tree is still standing and appears healthy. It made us think of the Hobbits as imagined by Tolkien.

This twin steer rig owned by Garners of Fortville, Indiana (near Indianapolis), has to be the king of the beasts at the show and there were many beasts. The driver told me that it cost around $600,000.00 before the paint job and other niceties. Indiana limits him to charging $450.00 per hour on jobs. You do the math to see how long it will take to recover the original cost, keeping in mind that he gets around four miles per gallon of diesel fuel.

I told him that it looked so clean that it appeared that it had never been used. Even the hooks were brightly painted and spotless. He said that it is used weekly to right overturned semi's and that they repaint things like the hooks on a regular basis.

The trucks entered in the beauty contest were probably every bit as polished as any car I've seen at concours d'elegance shows. One guy told me it took him something like six hours to polish his bumper and fuel tank alone. Amazing.

If you are into big trucks, this was a great show for you. I had no idea there were so many of these large tow trucks in the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky,Michigan and West Virginia area that they came from and yet all of the local ones I know about weren't there.

They were even a few antique tow trucks at the three day event. I had hoped there would have been more.

I have no idea why this fence line was here, just on the other side of the cactus is the face of Old Baldy, a sheer rock face. I'd like to meet the cow that would be up here.

I got up on day 4 (I think) at around 5 or 6 in the morning to see what a sunrise looks like. I don't mean what-a-sunrise-at-Garner-State-Park looks like. I mean what a sunrise looks like. I don't think I can actually say I have ever seen one.

I see where Trey Ratcliff is always talking about how awesome sunrises are. So I figured this might be a chance to see something magical. Since I don't see them, who knows? Maybe they are twice as awesome as sunsets.

They aren't.

Sunsets are waaaaaay more better.

Top 3 reasons for this.

#3 - You are probably already awake when a sunset is about to happen so there's no real "waking up" issues associated with them. This really could easily be #1.

#2 - You can see a sunset coming all day! There's no guessing. You just look up at the yellow ball at any point in the day and you have a pretty good idea if it's about to set or not. Sunrise? Forget about it. Who knows when those things happen? Their practically random.

#1 - After you finish taking all your cool sunset shots . . . it's night! Night is awesome! Morning are not. At all. After taking sun rise shots you have to go to work. Why is this even a debate?

Honorable Mention Reason - Clouds. You know exactly what sort of clouds you will be getting at sunset because you've been watching them all day. Sunrise? Who knows what you'll get? You just sit there and hope. Like an idiot.

So anyway - This is what Garner State Park looks like if you're foolish enough to get up at sunrise. Just to be clear - I do not recommend this in any way.
