Another shot courtesy of Flickr user m20wc51, this one of a baseball game being conducted next to some parked MATS planes, at least one of which appears to be having some work done on it. Photographer unknown, but dated between April and June of 1954, and apparently taken in Japan. My guess would be that the photographer is attached to either the unit or the planes, as in other shots, the bases change, but the planes don't, or at least, not so much. The original of the shot can be found here , for purposes of comparison.
The two planes closest to us look like Douglas C-124 Globemasters, but I've been wrong so often with my plane idetifications, that I don't say absolutely that's what they are. They just look like 'em. MATS planes of the 374th Troop Carrier Group, Globemasters in fact, were attached to Tachikawa Air Base in 1954. The third plane is evidently not a Globemaster, but it might be a Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter; the curve of the tailfin, and the spacing of the portholes both look about right.
I love this shot because it seems to me to reflect a quintessentially American cold war scene, the culture being exported around the globe, almost by accident, because young men and women in the service travelled wherever the war required them, and broadcast their way of life simply by showing up. For many older societies, these folks were their first taste of modernity, and it proved attractive and addictive.
As to why the ball seems to have dropped just in front of the batter – who knows? A failed bunt? The same rules can make an infinite variety of individual games.
