The beautiful Grand Place in Brussels a fusion between Gothic, Baroque and Louis XIV styles, contrasting with the multicultural Brussels...

Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the river's Westerschelde estuary. It is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Brussels.

La Grande Place (Grote Markt) is locate in the historical center of the city.

"As is the case with every great Flemish city, Antwerp’s medieval heart is a classic Grote Markt (market square). Here the triangular, pedestrianised space features the voluptuous, baroque Brabo Fountain depicting the hero of Antwerp’s giant-killing, hand-throwing foundation legend. Flanked on two sides by very photogenic guildhalls, the square is dominated by an impressive Italo-Flemish Renaissance-style stadhuis (town hall) completed in 1565."

"The Brabo Fountain (Brabofontein in Dutch) is a tribute to the mythical Roman soldier Silvius Brabo. According to legend, there was once a giant named Druon Antigoon who built a fortress along the Scheldt River. The giant forced passing boats to pay a toll, as well as anyone crossing the nearby bridge. If the travelers refused, Antigoon cut off one of their hands and tossed it into the river.

The giant’s reign of extortion came to an end when Silvius Brabo sailed down river. He refused to pay the giant’s toll, and challenged the giant to a duel. Brabo was victorious, and chopped off the giant’s head as well a hand, which he threw into the river."

At the Grand Place in Bruxelles, a Unesco patrimony, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Place every year there is a great concert during the Holiday Season which is really stunning : lights, classical music, champagne -- a beautiful tradition in the capital of the EU, which brings together people from all over the world. Enjoy!

Grand Place, Brussels, Belgium

Ready to receive the masses

* The first shot is not from Alsace but was taken in the northern French city of Arras, where we spent a night. This shows a section of the vast square in the centre of town called La Grand' Place. The square is surrounded by a unique architectural ensemble of 155 Flemish-Baroque-style townhouses. These were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and were initially made of wood. In 1918, after the end of World War I, most of the townhouses were so severely damaged that they had to be restored to their pre-war conditions. They are now made of bricks.
