Reflow GPU
2009.04.28 - In the Apartment. Trying to repair T40 loose connection from mobo by reflow with a tea candle filled with alcohol + heat gun
Stock heatsink on my ATI radeon HD 3850
It sucked, my GPU ran at 110C+ when gaming, it is too small to cool power hungry GPU and 8 memory chips at the same time, sapphire is a crappy company when it comes to adding proper cooling to a videocard.

A small GPU used by the RAF and RN used on types such as the Dominie and Jetstream. Seen here outside 750 Squadron, July 2010. This GPU replaced the Houchin Mk 5 in the early 1990's.
If anyone can assist with the make and other details I would be greatful.

The most popular BGA repair technique is called rebaling. During this repair process the component is de-soldered of the board, all original solder is removed and IC is reballed using higher quality, more reliable solder.
No photoshop, just old school modding. Started as a XFX R9 290XDD. Swapped the stock 88mm fans for msi torx 100mm fans. After removing the chrome bezzle and sanding for clearance I soldered in the fan and light connections as the MSI plugs were a different connector. Lower shot shows the shrink wrap on the solder connections to power the logo as well as control the fans. GPU runs an average of 10C lower during full load, plus I like the dragon
Didn't do a before and after so here is the stock configuration:

49) If the RROD is still there do not sweat it you may have to overheat the GPU to get things back to operating again. To do this remove the exhaust shield and fan-but keep the power plugged into the board. Next place the fan overtop of the CPU heatsink as shown in the picture and power back on. Let the system run for about 20 minutes and then cool off for about 5 and try again. If still no luck try tightening the bolts a little more and then repeat the GPU heating phase and cool down. If this still fails you may be one of the unlucky people that has a bad motherboard and requires replacment. If you need future help you can contact Cando Computers and we would be happy to assist you further. We can be reached at 403-526-2004 or info@candocomputers.net. Stay tuned for the next installment which includes installing the system into a new case.
I wrote a mandelbrot pixelshader today to see how it would work out. Turned out pretty good, can't iterate too much though.
For this picture, max iteration was 100.
