DATA STEWARDSHIP FOR A DIGITAL AGE

Russian bots and fake-ad buys have become part of our social lexicon, thanks to the recent Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data imbroglio, but it would be a huge mistake to think that the impact is limited to the tech titans. As companies seek to use their data for competitive advantage, how do you make sure you are protecting it and doing so in a trustworthy way? Maintaining ethical and efficient control over an ever-increasing data flow has become necessary to maintain customer trust. A conversation on best practices in data stewardship, the biggest missteps to avoid across all sectors, and the key privacy trends in data democratization, deep learning, and GDPR.

Born out of sophisticated cyber threats, technology advances, and concerns about data misuse, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is not just one of many other data protection frameworks or requirements. GDPR is the top regulatory focus of 2018, even among US companies, and is considered to be one of the most significant information security and privacy laws of our time. The law gives data subjects rights over their personal data and establishes obligations on any organization around the world that is processing the data of an EU data subject, making the applicability of the law follows data rather than following a data subject or physical location. GDPR requires all data controllers and data processors that handle personal data of data subjects to apply appropriate security and organizational measures in order to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of processing services. GDPR was enacted in 2016 and became enforceable on May 25, 2018.

A hands on workshop about navigating the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation.

GDPR Regulation can be quite confusing for organizations that fall in the scope of compliance. For achieving compliance, it is essential that organizations determine whether they are a controller or a processor to comply with the requirements. GDPR has clearly outlined different requirements for a Data Controller and a Data Processor. So, for organizations to meet these requirements determining their role and activity is crucial. Addressing this, we have covered an informative video on “GDPR – Am I Data Controller or Data Processor?” for the benefit and an easy understanding of our viewers/organizations looking to achieve compliance.

If you find this video interesting and wish to learn more about the regulation, then do drop us a comment in the comment section below.

Data protection services refer to a range of solutions that help organizations to safeguard their sensitive and confidential data from unauthorized access, theft, loss, or corruption. These services are designed to ensure that data is secure and compliant with relevant laws and regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

There are several types of data protection services, including:

Data Backup and Recovery: These services involve the creation of regular backups of critical data to protect against accidental deletion, corruption, or loss due to natural disasters or cyber attacks. Data can be stored both on-premise or in the cloud, and recovery options vary based on the type of service.

Data Encryption: Encryption involves transforming data into an unreadable format using algorithms, making it inaccessible to unauthorized parties. Data encryption services provide an added layer of security to protect data from theft or breaches.

Identity and Access Management: These services are designed to control user access to sensitive data by enforcing authentication and authorization protocols. This ensures that only authorized personnel can access confidential data, and helps to prevent data breaches caused by human error or malice.

Data Loss Prevention: These services use tools and technologies to identify, monitor, and prevent sensitive data from being accessed or transmitted outside of an organization's network. This includes monitoring email and web traffic, as well as implementing policies and controls to prevent data leaks.

Compliance Management: Compliance management services help organizations ensure that they are adhering to relevant regulations and standards, such as GDPR or the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). This includes providing risk assessments, security audits, and compliance reporting.

Overall, data protection services are essential for any organization that handles sensitive data. By implementing a comprehensive data protection strategy, organizations can minimize the risk of data breaches, protect their reputation, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
