As I was visiting Six Mile Cypress Slough on Saturday I saw a good sized gator chased across the lake by a smaller gator. They came straight at the boardwalk I was on so I got down for a low angle. If you look close you can see a little hitchhiker right above the gator's eye.

FYI the sign was in the photo but actually faces the other direction. I just tuned it around in PS.

Taken at Okefenokee Swamp while kayaking - lots of alligators but surprisingly few water birds. (I guess the gators had to eat something.)

the gators cannot eat just yet as their body temp has to get up so they can digest their food and not turn into concrete in their stomachs.

The rookery at Smith Oaks in located on an island which is usually surrounded by gators. The gators protect the eggs and chicks from raccoons, possums, cats and other critters. The gators also take a few birds, especially chicks who have fallen from the nest. I love to arrive well before shooting time and just observe the dynamics of the rookery. Much is beautiful and even magical, but the underlying theme is that life in the wild is very hard and often unforgiving.

A really big gator seen at Anahuac Wildlife Refuge last weekend. I really wanted to try and let you see how awesome his teeth are so this is cropped from the next photo which has most of him. I was too close to get him all in...no worries it was with the 400mm lens and he was across the canal. Best viewed LARGE....all the better to eat you my dear:)

The art of lifeforms. Mother Nature never ceases to amaze me with the myriad forms, spectacular in power, that she has put forth over the eons. Some have been around for so long, such as this one. Each deserves your respect. Believe it or not, this alligator is critical to your drinking water. Never assume you are independent of other beings. That is a sad and ignorant viewpoint, that has gotten our species into a lot of trouble, and we're going to have a time getting out of it. But I do believe we can, if we start to open up and see things with a broader perspective and a keener eye.

From the series "I AM GATOR"

I met this little fella, peering up at me, at the Black Hammock area of Orlando, at Lake Jesup. He was the first image I took with my new series of cameras that I've been adoring. This is a vintage/golden aged type treatment of the image.

Was apparently a banner year for the gators! We saw sooooo many!

This male seemed to be the deepest bass vibrato in the area. The finer concentric circles in the water are from the vibration of his mating call. This behavior continues on into May when the mating begins, routinely in the evening. I don't usually photograph gators unless they are displaying an interesting behavior and this was one of those times.

-- Strange to see an open vista in crowded SE Florida. We almost forgot what open space looks like. But don't go down there; lots of alligators.

Finally got ahold of the small gators and knew what I had to do. A gator nest! Gators actually are good mothers who do try to protect hatchlings and the young gators. Their nests are usually piles of detritus, as the decomposing plants will help temperature control the eggs like an incubator.
