I doubt it's a real taxi. It's often parked in front of a Starbucks in Campbell on weekend nights. I'm moving back to Los Angeles (WOOHOO!) so I took a quick snapshot to remember it by.

Yesterday, Trevor Hattersley came around to my office with a flash drive containing some pictures which he and Karen got at The Henley Festival at Henley on Thames in jolly old England. Trev wanted to see if I could fix some exposure problems and generally doll the images up. As usual, I said no worries, as long as I could use the for fish relief on Madang - Ples Bilong Mi.
But first, let me show you last evening's sunset:
The glow of the ship's lights on the right is a nice balance to the fiery cloud tops on the left in the Southern sky.
Apparently one can't get into The Henley Festival without a coat and tie. I still do own one tie, though I haven't worn it for at least a decade. It's one of those skinny ones from the mid '60s. The colour is a dark, reddish maroon. I could probably still tie a Windsor knot, with a little practice, but where am I going to wear it? I'm saving it for when I die. I want to lie in state in my Lt. Dangle short jeans, a black Harley Davidson t-shirt and my skinny tie around my neck tied with a bit, fat Windsor knot. Anyway, here are Karen and Trevor looking like a fashion model who has brought her sheep dog along to the party:
Trevor will give me some lip over that remark, because my hair is possibly even longer than his. I never thought that Trev really looked like the person that he is until he let his hair grow out and let it go a little wild.
Also at the party was Claire Hodgkinson, who was bridesmaid at Karen and Trevor's wedding. Trevor told me that the pebble encrusted pony in this shot was going for £200,000 (or maybe it was £20,000, I'm not sure). That's a lot of bread for something that's going to end up in the attic gathering dust after a couple of decades:
The festival include an incredible variety of entertainments. There are bands and famous solo artists of all sorts, artworks scattered about, fashion contests and fireworks, to mention just a few distractions.
Since whimsy is my thing, I am particularly attracted to this Wire Woman. However, I don't care much for the chair:
The problem is that she takes up too much space. Unless you had a house the size of Bill Gates', where would you put her? It's not like you can hang her on the wall. I suppose that you could create a conversation nook where friends could sit around with you and make witty, unkind remarks about her as if she weren't there. One thing that you would definitely want to do is to keep her well clear of electrical outlets.
The entire event came within a hair's breadth of a tragic end when poor Trev, wine glass in hand, was viciously attacked by this Stainless Steel Horse:
Fortunately, Trev had had the presence of mind to shake his head violently and roar. The horse mistook him for a lion in disguise and fled the scene. I'd love to go to The Henley Festival some day to soak up some culture. But I'd have to borrow some clothes.

It's a bizarre amalgamation of a bit of my own Dubious Art (a headlamp of our Nissan Navara) with a sketch of me in my Cherokee braids, Space Cowboys sunglasses and black fedora hat.
I don't know what to make of it. It's a little scary.

Last night I went out and had a seriously good time, even the lovely Miss Zeee came all the way from Switzerland to celebrate one of those (in)famous funky Fridays with the best people in the world, it was so much fun and I've met so many lovely folks that I would all adopt and keep close to my heart, mind and soul if I had the financial means to do so...but then again, they all got jobs so that should not really keep me from doing a 'Brangelina' on them, if only my Penthouse apartment wasn't so space-challenged, hehe ;-)

On October the 4th a new Art exhibition started at the 'ABC Treehouse' in Amsterdam, featuring 10 of my wicked puddle reflections :D
The theme is "AMS * NYC * AMS an artistic look at a 400 year affair". Exhibition and Special Events, 4 October – 29 November 2009. At the ABC Treehouse, Voetboogstraat 11, 1012XK Amsterdam (the link goes to Google Maps).
Public viewing hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Time 13h00 to 18h00. Free admission.

Funk è un termine coniato negli Stati Uniti negli anni cinquanta, per indicare delle caratteristiche ritmiche e sonore presenti in diversi ambiti musicali. Inizialmente il termine fu usato nel jazz per indicare un approccio musicale rude e libero da sofisticazioni, legato al blues, con riff ripetitivi e con un ritmo incalzante. In seguito l'aggettivo funky fu utilizzato sempre più anche in altri ambiti musicali come il soul ed il R&B.
Il significato del vocabolo funk (ed il suo aggettivo funky) nello slang degli afroamericani indica generalmente un cattivo odore,[1] come l'odore sprigionato dal corpo in stato di eccitazione, e per estensione poteva significare "sexy", "sporco", "attraente" ma anche "autentico", cioè originale e libero da inibizioni.
Storia del genere [modifica]
Dopo gli album di James Brown (influenzato dal suo sassofonista Maceo Parker), Papa's got a brand new bag (1965) e I got you (1966) si cominciò a considerare il funk come un vero e proprio genere musicale. Il termine fece la sua comparsa ufficiale nel rock in un brano del 1967 di Dyke and the Blazers (Funky Broadway).
George Clinton è considerato il principale innovatore del Funk e con i suoi gruppi Parliament e Funkadelic incominciò ad esibirsi negli anni settanta definendosi per sacerdoti della religione "della giungla e della strada" nata per liberare gli umani dalle forze negative di un mondo senza funk, inventandosi il genere “P-Funk”, che ha assunto il significato di "Parliament - Funkadelic", il Funk alla massima potenza, nella sua forma più pura. Artisti legati a George Clinton sono sicuramente due altri grandi padri del P-Funk. Il bassista Bootsy Collins, che ha fatto parte sia della band di James Brown (nella banda The JB's) sia dei Parliament-Funkadelic, e Roger Troutman con i suoi Zapp & Roger, portando alla notorietà mondiale il "talkbox", un modificatore di voce prima utilizzato solo in collegamento a delle chitarre da gruppi Rock, di lì in poi invece collegandolo da un lato ad un sintetizzatore e dall'altro alla bocca, creando un suono magico.
Negli anni settanta il Funk sviluppò i tratti caratteristici che lo distinguono tuttora: linee di basso incalzanti e ripetitive (esemplari quelle del bassista di Sly Stone, Larry Graham, creatore del slap), riff di chitarra elettrica taglienti e sincopati, nutrite sezioni fiato e facile ballabilità dei brani, largo spazio ai brani strumentali e agli assoli. Negli anni settanta e ottanta il funk si mescolò con la disco music con gruppi come Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool & The Gang o i Jackson Five: secondo alcuni scadendo commercialmente, secondo altri elevando la qualità della disco music.
Nel jazz a partire dalla fine degli anni sessanta il termine funky prese ad indicare dapprima alcuni lavori jazz ibridati col funk ed il blues (hard bop) ad esempio certi brani di Horace Silver, o Blue Mitchell nonché Lee Morgan ed in seguito, più in generale, uno stile influenzato dal funk anni settanta e dal rock, da alcuni definito jazz-funk (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, George Benson, Stanley Clarke). Nell'uso comune impropriamente i termini jazz rock, fusion e funky sono poi divenuti sinonimi.
Dopo gli anni ottanta l'inafferrabile funk si è mescolato con altri generi ed ha ispirato i musicisti più disparati (a titolo di esempio si paragoni Atomic Dog dei George Clinton (1982) e What's my name di Snoop Doggy Dogg, e si considerino le influenze musicali di Earth, Wind and Fire su alcuni lavori di Elio e le Storie Tese). Il P-Funk è alla base della nascita del West Coast Rap, artisti come gli N.W.A., DJ Quik, Too $hort e tutti i padri del Gangsta Rap si sono infatti ispirati alle sonorità soprattutto di George Clinton e Roger Troutman.
Le influenze funky della musica soul e della musica disco nel jazz hanno portato all'odierno acid jazz (ad esempio gruppi come Jamiroquai, James Taylor Quartet o Incognito mostrano chiari influssi funk).
In ultimo, il funk unito alle prime sperimentazioni elettroniche degli anni settanta e alla disco music ha dato vita al genere house dalle mani dei DJ produttori Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan e altri; il genere, ormai il più ballato negli ultimi 30 anni, ha a sua volta rivoluzionato tutto il mondo della musica dando il via a molti altri generi oggi classificati sotto il nome Electronic Dance Music (EDM).
Si potrebbe affermare che il funk è nato come aggettivo per definire alcune caratteristiche musicali esistenti, si è evoluto a genere autonomo negli anni settanta ed oggi è sostanzialmente tornato alla sua funzione di aggettivo, per caratterizzare alcune specificità di generi come l'acid jazz o l'hip hop, od il funk-rock, oppure semplicemente nei nomi di alcuni gruppi musicali (ad esempio Planet Funk). Attualmente nell'ambito funk-rock i Red Hot Chili Peppers sono considerati fra i gruppi più rappresentativi del genere.

I've been wanting to combine these colors for some time~~moss green and amber. Once I started putting the pieces together they reminded me of the funky colors in the 1970s kitchen I grew up with~~the refrigerator was avocado green and so was the sculptured carpet in the living room, the stove was a burnt rust color, the linoleum floor a funky yellow that matched the rotary phone the hung on the wall.
I finally have some brand new, funky hair colors for everybody to try out and see if they love. One hair pack is called "Mad" and it has four different funky dip colors. The other hair pack has four Ombre and Root colors. I'm excited to see what everybody thinks of them and hopefully some of you will be rockin' em. You'll be able to pick them up at Hair Fair on Saturday the 2nd. I hope to see you all there!
