Former Southdown Motor Services convertible open-top number 417 (417 DCD). A Leyland PD3 with Northern Counties NCME bodywork in Hartlepool County Durham during August 1999, dedicated to a shuttle service between the shopping centre and the docks area.

Bristol SU with Eastern Coachworks ECW body on approach to the terminus at Luccombe Village on the Isle of Wight during July 1971. Yet to receive the NBC livery and name if it ever did.

Former Southdown operated Leyland PD3 with Northern Counties bodywork and Bristol FLF6G Lodekka with Eastern Coachworks ECW body in Bournemouth Dorset, both as ancillary suport driver training buses.

In the final couple of years of operation, before being acquired along with the Patton's business by Western, Cunninghams Ex Ribble Burlingham bodied Leyland Titan PD3 KCK 930 is seen in Paisley awaiting trade. The two lines of thought on the subject of front engined double deckers are visible in this shot, the traditional Leyland... though with more modern fully fronted body style, and the Guy Wulfrunianesque Volvo Ailsa with it's small turbocharged engine on the front platform.

Most of the population of Wolverhampton seems to have come out to witness the aftermath of what looks all-in-all to be a fairly minor, if somewhat inexplicable, collision. Ironic that from 1961 Guy Motors was owned by Jaguar Cars Ltd until it all sank into the morass of British Leyland. I don't know who to feel most sorry for - the passengers still on board who won't be getting to Willenhall any time soon; the hapless bus driver who in the course of some avoiding action has nearly ended up on the pavement; or the owner of the Austin Cambridge whose sills and front wings are rotting away in the manner typical of mass-produced cars of the period.

 

In addition to the vehicles St James Square has also disappeared, a victim of urban redevelopment.

Potters Bar (PB) Garage based Metro-Cammell Weymann MCW bodied AEC Merlin on departure from St.Albans (SA) Garage forecourt bound for New Barnet Station on route 84 during July 1973. Note the LTE flag and National Bus Company NBC double-N jointly on a post behind the bus and competing newspaper bins for the Evening Standard and Evening News. Much in this picture has since been consigned to the history books.
