A peaceful view of one of the fountains at Descanso Gardens. You know, the photography books are right--sidelight and backlight are more interesting than frontlight in many cases.
I created this image with a remote trigger and the camera on a tripod (it's a self-portrait). My intention was to catch the streak of sunlight coming in through some blinds, creating both strong and weak front light in the same image. I did this with the intention of exploring Freeman's ideas on creating high-contrast lighting, and converted to black and white to create an even more stark contrast (no pun intended). I think it's an effective portrait (though I lament I'm getting old!).
Obviously, I did some processing on this image. In particular, I used ACR to adjust shadows, highlights, and whites, add clarity and dehaze, and put a shallow vignette on the frame. I also (obviously) converted to black and white.

strobist info:
A SB-600 and a SB-800 pointed at the backwall, nothing more. Frontlight coming from the reflections off the (nearly) white walls in that room
This image that i called it(Sunset), I put the focus on the sun. The sun is clearly to see. the sky, ocean, grass will be a foil arounding with the sun. I take it in the frontlighting. the colour is yellow and red. it's beautiful, it enrich my picture. In the composition way, I take it from a front angle view with a telephoto lens. it gives us a powerful feeling.that's what i wanted.
