"CULTURE. Culture is how an organization makes sense of the world, a set of assumptions internalized by all its members. Most organizations are the cultural equivalent of stone age tribes: focused on "the hunt," "the kill," and what's for dinner today. Like stone age tribes, they're fractious, unproductive, and easily broken. In the culture strategy, social tools are used to help an organization make better sense of the world. Accountability, roles, tasks, processes, incentives — that's what shapes culture, and in the culture strategy, social tools are utilized to reconceive them. Wal-Mart's Sustainability Index is a radical example of a culture-changer, altering all of the above, helping Wal-Mart's entire ecosystem make sense of the world anew."

Each year EOP Transitional Programs offers a summer experience to help students bridge the time between high school and university. The program's goals are to give students a head start toward a successful college experience and the opportunity to begin building a strong community.
Freshstart--A concept restaurant meant to be part of Isla Vista's "new look"--a bold experiment intended to be a model "action research" project by Professor Kim Yasuda and her students. The restaurant owners submitted to an exercise in "aesthetics as social enterprise." Professor and students micro-designed the store from furniture and counters to wall spaces and front facade. Yasuda is a visual artist and professor of spatial studies in the Art Department and co-director of the UC Institute for Research in the Arts. Part of her goal was to move from gallery installation art to more dramatically public art work with the aim of helping to make Isla Vista a more habitable and attractive community. Opening in the summer of 2008, Freshstart was out of business by February of 2010--proving once again the difficulty of going from concept to practice. The success of Freebirds down the street suggests that perhaps I.V. was not yet ready for a cafe-creperie, preferring instead a well-stuffed, well-priced burrito.
