The habitat of the Green Heron is small wetlands in low-lying areas. When standing erect, the neck will stretch three times as long as shown in the picture. The species is most conspicuous during dusk and dawn, and if anything these birds are nocturnal rather than diurnal, preferring to retreate to sheltered areas in daytime. They feed actively during the day, however, if hungry or provisioning young. They typically stand still on shore or in shallow water or perch upon branches and await prey that mainly consists of small fish, frogs and aquatic arthropods.

I was lucky to catch this bird in full frame while in focus. Background is a pond with surface algae. Very seldom do I get an opportunity like this with my manual focus lens.

I recently heard a 99% Invisible podcast on UTBAPHs. I immediately thought of an UTBAPH that exists right in my neighborhood and set out to pinhole photograph it.
You can read more about UTBAPHs and listen to the podcast here:
Mike Neilson has been building a global atlas of UTBAPHs and my pinhole photograph (color version) was added to the database.

A population of red-crowed cranes spend the winter nights standing in the Setsuri River near Tsurui Village, Hokkaido, Japan. Early one morning an adult crane caught a large prawn in the river and its juvenile chased it across a snow-covered gravel bar vocalizing loudly trying to get the prawn from its parent.

A quintessential Lisbon culinary experience captured on a tray from the vibrant Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira). This selection showcases the rich diversity of Portuguese seafood cuisine, confirmed by the branded plates. The generous array includes tender, beautifully roasted octopus (Polvo), likely prepared à Lagareiro-style, served over potatoes and seasoned with herbs and crumbs. Next, a portion of large, succulent shrimp (Gambas) is swimming in a rich, piquant, reddish sauce, accompanied by a flavorful yellow crumble (possibly farofa or cornbread). The meal is balanced by a side bowl of buttery white rice with cashews and a serving of crispy, square appetizers topped with a spicy sauce. This high-angle shot highlights the abundance, freshness, and vibrant colors of the freshly prepared dishes, cementing Time Out Market as a must-visit destination for food lovers in Lisbon.
Need some help from my bird-loving contacts. Is this a great blue heron or a tri-colored heron? He has such colorful plumage, I have a tough time identifying him. This is actually 2 views of a single heron. I included an extra view to show the display of his front feathers. Really was a handsome fellow. Poor guy has tangled fishing line around both feet and more dangling from his body. The perils of hanging around docks and fishermen.
P.S. Mystery solved thanks to my Flickr friends. It's a great blue heron. Thanks!

Fun Facts about Osprey:
*Ospreys are found on every continent except Antarctica. They breed on all continents except Antarctica and South America.
*Ospreys eat a diet which consists almost exclusively of fish. This earned them the nickname “sea hawk.”
*Ospreys hunt fish by hovering over water and then diving feet first to capture prey in their powerful talons.
*An Osprey’s outer toe is reversible, which means they can carry prey (slippery fish) with two toes in front and two toes behind.
*While flying away with the freshly-caught prey, an Osprey will manipulate the fish so that it is parallel to the bird’s body, and thus aerodynamic.
*The oldest known North American Osprey lived to be 25 years old.
*During the mid-20th century, North American Osprey populations suffered great losses (along with other birds of prey) due to widespread use of the pesticide DDT. After DDT and other contaminants were banned, the *Osprey recovered fairly quickly.
*Ospreys make large nests on the top of dead or live trees. They will also readily use nest platforms or other man-made structures like utility poles.
More Facts from Judy (Thanks!) :
More facts.........those special talons automatically "lock" onto the fish, to ensure that they won't drop it.....and they have a fail safe device built into them that make's it impossible to release the fish into the nest when there are babies, if the fish is still flopping about. It could knock a baby out of the nest.....so they will take it to a nearby spot and disable it first....Osprey spend summer's together, but the male and female go on separate vacations in the south. (That is how they keep their 15-20 yr. marriage going!)...Each couple has their own "decorating" style when building their nest. Some show specific preference for certain building material....I Watched a couple two summers ago that had a thing for yellow caution tape. Every year, they go all over collecting it and wrapping their entire nest in it!...They are also the only predatory bird that can actually dive into water. Unlike eagles that snatch their prey off the surface, osprey can dive down up to 3 ft. to grab a fish. Like all birds, their bones are hollow, which makes them buoyant.

A bird of southern swamps, the Anhinga is known as the Snake-Bird for its habit of swimming with just its long head and neck sticking out of the water. This one popped up out of the water unexpectedly with a fresh catch as I was sitting on a friend's deck at a dinner party. As soon as he swallowed his catch, he went back under, not to be seen for the rest of the evening.
