WEEK 5 – Poplar/Kirby Kroger, Set II
Aha, we’ve finally reached the shot I was waiting for – the fresh fare mural! I mentioned to y’all last time that each of the three fresh fare stores in Memphis had one of these. (I assume that may also have been true for most, if not all, other fresh fare stores elsewhere, but I really can’t confirm that.) What’s cool about them is that they were all customized to the neighborhoods the stores were in, albeit without being overly overt about it. The one at Mendenhall/Sanderlin showcased such local East Memphis landmarks as The Racquet Club, Malco Paradiso, and the i-Bank Tower; while the one at Exeter drew attention to Saddle Creek and Germantown’s love of horses (which is actually still reflected in the replacement store across the street, believe it or not!).
Sadly, however, as you well know both of those murals are now long gone, and as l_dawg wrote at his own picture of the Exeter mural here, it’s probably just as well, given that the Saddle Creek fountain in that mural is also now long gone, as is The Racquet Club, which closed in early 2019.
As for the Poplar/Kirby mural pictured here – I’m less familiar with the actual names of the landmarks on this one, but the buildings are all extremely recognizable nonetheless; all of them are located within a few miles of this store, such as the funky all-glass Hilton high-rise, and the also-all-glass curvy building on the left (which I believe is a multi-tenant office complex). Again, though, as I’ve said: this mural is gone now, too :( But, on the bright side: I’m happy I was able to get all three of them photographed before they disappeared :)

This was a hard theme for me. How to convey fresh? I went with a fresh face / body type of theme and was delighted to see Sarah's citrus shots. The droplets tied both the photos in nicely, only a tweak of the colors was done to make the images work well together.

Only a few months old, this GEVO heads up the first Escanaba bound E-Rail of the year. Train is longer than in 2012, where you could see the DPU from this spot. Although when they first went by me they were flying, by this point they were giving all they had and had slowed waaay down coming out of town.
