Over a thousand people braved the freezing Lake Michigan water to raise money for the Special Olympics at the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge. They had to bring trucks in to clear out the snow and ice for the plungers to be able to enter the water.
I'm posting more than I usually do, but I figured that if these people were willing to jump in that frigid lake for charity and I got a picture of them, I owe it to them to post it!

The test of a system to keep the feeders from freezing is really low temps. So last night got down to 20 degrees Farenheit, and it was 23 when I got up at 8 am. The feeder mix was slushy. I had the lights on from 6 pm to 6 am. Maybe I should have kept them on longer. I changed the mixture and left the lights on today. The Anna's hummingbirds did not seem to mind the lights on, they continued to feed during the day. I hope this Arctic blast ends soon.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this was much further north, or even on another continent, but as the crow flies, it's only 150 miles from London to this stunning frozen phenomena where ice-climbers are flocking to put their crampons and ice-picks to the test before the giant frozen waterfall begins to thaw.
The one hundred foot icicles on Kinder Downfall have only just reached peak condition and are now ready for the brave to climb - if they can reach the remote location over 2000 feet up in the Peak District, just north of Buxton, Derbyshire.
Medical students, Marije Jansen, 30, and Sean Cox, 31 were the first climbers to reach the ice at eight o'clock this morning. Sean said: "I moved to Derby last September and I'd never have believed I'd be ice climbing in The Peak District this winter - you never quite know whether the ice is going to hold - it's a bit sketchy really, but it's just amazing."
Marije said: "When you climb on rocks you have to bend your body and squeeze through gaps - but climbing on ice feels like you are cheating - you just hack your way through it with your ice picks - is a bit like digging a way up through the ice with a Black and Decker."
Mountain Rescuer and Mountaineering Instructor, Nick Lord said: "It takes a week of temperatures below zero before Kinder Downfall freezes solid. Now it has, it should stay iced-up for a week or so even if things do start to thaw elsewhere.
"The water that runs off the Kinder Scout plateau runs through peat - it's this that makes lots of the ice look browny-yellow."

Schönbrunn Palace (German: Schloss Schönbrunn [ʃøːnˈbʁʊn]) in Vienna is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria and since the 1860s has also been one of the major tourist attractions in Vienna. The palace and gardens illustrate the tastes, interests and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs.
Early history
Schönbrunn from the front side, painted by Canaletto in 1758
In the year 1569, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II purchased the Katterburg, which was located on a large area between Meidling and Hietzing where today Schönbrunn's parks and different buildings are situated. He showed interest in the newly founded zoo, the Tiergarten Schönbrunn, and tried to establish not only a systematic maintenance of wild animals, but also a garden of rare and exotic plants. He is justifiably called the creator of Schönbrunn's garden arrangement.
The new name, Schönbrunn ("beautiful well"), has its roots in a water well from which water was consumed by the royal court in Vienna. During the next century many members of the royal family of Austria spent their summer vacations and hunting excursions in the Katterburg. In the days of the Turkish sieges the Katterburg was nearly destroyed and it appeared to be impossible to restore the castle.

Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck, and since 1919, has housed Central Park’s official weather station.
Belvedere Castle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867–1869. An architectural hybrid of Gothic and Romanesque styles, Vaux's design called for a Manhattan schist and granite structure with a corner tower with conical cap, with the existing lookout over parapet walls between them.[1] Its name comes from belvedere, which means "beautiful view" in Italian.[2]: 162
Belvedere Castle was built as a shell with doors and windows open to the weather. Originally, the main tower had a more medieval design, with a weather antenna on top, but during the castle's 1983 renovation, the tower was restored in a German style with a flag, a weather vane, and an anemometer on top. The two fanciful half-timbered wooden pavilions deteriorated without painting and upkeep and were removed before 1900, but restored in the 1980s.
Starting in 1919, Belvedere Castle housed the New York Meteorological Observatory, which had been taken over by the United States Weather Bureau. The current weather station in Central Park, an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), is located immediately south of the castle, though wind equipment is still located on the main tower.
