Taken today, while walking in temperatures of -26 Celsius. The rocks on the ice is from a pandemic game where people throw rocks on the lake to see how far they will skid across the ice.

Though it was an exceptionally cold winter and spring, a snowstorm in Mid-may is unheard of here. Unfortunately, a large group of recently-arrived migrating Tree Swallows got caught in the storm and had to hunker down on the tree branches overlooking the Yukon River, and wait it out. I feared the worst would happen during the 24 hour storm, and was worried sick that they would die from exhaustion as a result of their long journey from Central America, a lack of food as there were no flying insects, strong winds and sub-zero temperatures. I returned the next morning and found no dead birds, so presumably most had survived. They seemed to go into a state of semi-torpor (slow metabolism) and huddled (see note) to conserve energy, a strategy that apparently worked.
As surreal as it appears, this shot is pretty much straight out of the camera with a few contrast, vibrance and saturation adjustments in CS5. The green bokeh is courtesy of the deep green colour of the Yukon River in the spring. Eventually, this photo and others, along with the story, attracted significant international media attention. With overnight temperatures dipping into the minus 20's C, the wide channels of the Yukon River are frozen over now, leaving only the deeper, fast moving water in narrow sections. The remaining open water steams in the freezing temperatures, creating mist and clouds.
We have been in a deep freeze for the past few days in Collin County, TX. Light snow (and everyone goes crazy) that is already gone. But still we are at freezing temps. The water fountains turn into "ice art" however! This is a part of a columnar water fountain and I noticed the angled shadows of the sun.
We get wickedly cold temperatures here in Edmonton.
Here is a shot of Whitecourt, Alberta, at nearly -40C which is the same thing as 40F below. Any way you measure this temperature, it is nasty.
But somehow, the residents of Alberta survive these sub-zero temps, as did their pioneer relatives in the past.
And just how did the pioneers manage that?
I would like to know.

Getting close to the end of my novel, Martha's Vine. And all is going very well. In the second book, Martha's world must cope with the increasing reality of living in cold temperatures without power.

Late this year, it finally started getting colder in the Yukon, and over the last 2 weeks, we've had a steady accumulation of snow since I took this shot. All the smaller lakes are frozen, and recently we've had overnight temperature's near minus 30. The Yukon River, seen here in early evening near the Whitehorse dam, is also starting to freeze up.

With the frigid temperatures and snowy winter we've been experiencing, I couldn't help but rethink this image from a couple of winters ago! And it's only January!
The crocuses are looking magnificent at the moment despite the freezing temperatures. Spring must be almost here!
I saw no other person (nor car in the parking lot) this morning when the temperature was 20° F. Webster Groves, Missouri

Kaley Cuoco braves the freezing temperatures while filming an intense and emotional scene for her upcoming TV thriller "The Flight Attendant" in New York City. Kaley was seen sporting watery eyes and all bundled up in between takes as it was extremely cold. 13 Nov 2019 Pictured: Kaley Cuoco. Photo credit: LRNYC / MEGA TheMegaAgency.com +1 888 505 6342
These three were part of a group of several hundred migrating swallows that were caught in a freak mid-May snowstorm on the Yukon River. Seen here early the following morning, they are huddling on an alder branch with their feathers fluffed up to conserve heat, while sunning themselves in the freezing temperatures. All, or at least most, survived the ordeal, as I saw no dead birds. They moved on the following day, likely heading further north. See below:
p.s. Thanks for the comments everybody. I'm heading north for a few days to try and get out of the constant rain here, and hopefully have the opportunity to take a photo or two before winter arrives.
One of the most dreaded phrases in hiking but much better than saying "we're lost". It is also a whole lot easier on the ankles to side-hill in foot-deep powder than on solid ground.

I had the pleasure of spending a few days up at Lace Le Jeune with Matt this past week. It was gorgeous!
Enjoy your Friday!
After a December that looked like fall, the real winter has come now. Snow, snow and even more snow! And worst of all: the temperatures that make you think you are in Siberia. I want Summer!! Now!

This was a very long exposure of 30 seconds. I walked into the frame for the last 10-12 seconds. It was pitch black outside, and I had a difficult time seeing through the viewfinder. I kind of went to infinity, then backed it off just a bit. since I was taking this at 18mm, I was just hoping for the correct focusing adjustments. I made very few adjustments in PS, other than cropping it to a square image, and lightening the shadow detail a little.

For most of the recent cloudy, wet Yukon summer, trees swallows appeared dull brown with a white belly. The flashy metallic blue colours of their dorsal feathers are seen only under bright light conditions, viewed from a certain angle, especially in morning light when the sun is low. Colour attributed to 'iridescence', also known as 'thin film interference', is not caused by pigment but the manner and angle in which light strikes special nanostructures in their feathers. Nature is so flippin' amazing!

Seen here sunning himself in the freezing temperatures the following morning, he and a few others allowed me to take photos from close range, unusual for this species. I was wearing camo gear and had been standing still for a quite awhile. They were likely in a state of semi-torpor to conserve energy.

The winter and I have had it out, and the break-up was inevitable. I am moving on to Spring, more lovely, and gentle, filled with growth and wonder, hope, optimism, warmth. Bye, bye Winter, we are through. If you had only left a few weeks ago, we could have parted on good terms.
Many thanks for your visits and comments, always welcome, always appreciated.

This was some shot to take. In total darkness, lit by only the moon. I set my camera on a tripod and used manual to 30 second exposure, with the lens wide open at f./ 3.5. It was so dark out that I couldn't even see in my viewfinder. I turned off the auto focus, and set it on the lens for infinity. Then I opened my 18-55mm lens to 18mm(27), and set the shutter speed for 30, and set the lens wide open at ƒ/3.5, and hoped for the best.. I took this very early in the morning, before sunlight. and waited parientley for the 30 seconds to go by. What I saw on my screen was incredible, and brighter than I ever imagined posible.

Was approximately -1F/-18C on this day. Great day for testing out the ice on the Fox river in Batavia, Illinois.
Over a thousand people braved the freezing Lake Michigan water to raise money for the Special Olympics at the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge. They had to bring trucks in to clear out the snow and ice for the plungers to be able to enter the water.
I'm posting more than I usually do, but I figured that if these people were willing to jump in that frigid lake for charity and I got a picture of them, I owe it to them to post it!
