Was approximately -1F/-18C on this day. Great day for testing out the ice on the Fox river in Batavia, Illinois.

Over a thousand people braved the freezing Lake Michigan water to raise money for the Special Olympics at the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge. They had to bring trucks in to clear out the snow and ice for the plungers to be able to enter the water.

Texaco began as the Texas Fuel Company in 1902, founded in Beaumont, Texas. Initially, it wasn’t set up to drill wells or produce crude oil but focused on refining and distributing petroleum products. Over time, it expanded its operations, and by the 1920s, Texaco was a well-established name in gasoline and motor oil.

This 1923 ad would have been part of Texaco’s early branding efforts, likely promoting its growing reputation in fuel and lubrication. The winter imagery, with the phrase "Cold engine—no matter!", emphasizes Texaco motor oil's reliability even in freezing temperatures. The comparison to a boy with new skates evokes a sense of excitement and readiness, making the product feel dynamic rather than just functional.

Texaco's branding was strong during this period. The company consistently marketed its petroleum products as clear, clean, and golden-colored, reinforcing a perception of quality and purity. The phrase "Run with Texaco Gasoline—Save it with Texaco Motor Oil" suggests synergy between its products, urging drivers to stay loyal to the brand.

This ad also taps into a sense of adventure—the idea that a car should be as ready to go as its driver, no matter the weather. It’s subtle but effective in positioning Texaco as a trustworthy companion for winter driving.

The morning after a freak spring snowstorm, these migrating tree-swallows huddled in a pile to conserve precious energy as they sunned themselves in the freezing temperatures. I've never heard of or seen this behaviour before with any bird. By forming a dense mass like this and sharing body heat, energy is conserved. I think this photo may be one of the only ever taken of this phenomenon, so it might be exceptionally rare, possibly unique. The following photo taken the previous day during the snowstorm has gained international media attention www.flickr.com/photos/keithmwilliams/5727282051/in/photos... Part of a group of several hundred migrating swallows, the photos were taken on the shore of the Yukon River in northern Canada.

Chicago has had quite a bit of snow and sub zero temperatures over the past week. I've never actually seen Lake Michigan frozen solid in this area.

After an hour and a half drive to Chicago, I was greeted with a bland and foggy skyline.

At the corner of Broadway & 181st St, just outside the McD, two young people were quietly discussing the food they'd bought at a local "slow food" restaurant, apparently discussing each item as the young woman took them out of the shopping bag provided.

There's nothing overly strange about the scene, other than the fact that this was a record-breaking cold day, rendered positively polar by a fierce arctic wind. Even our new mayor recommended not going out if it wasn't necessary, so why didn't these two wait to get home to do the intense discussion and/or food exchange. They could even have stepped indoors to McD! At least he's wearing gloves...but only a hoodie and a denim jacket! But her ears are covered--sort of, and she IS wearing a ski jacket. It's a pity she's wearing a draping pashmina-style scarf that hides her face completely...

Obviously, these two weren't feeling the cold in any urgent way. I was OK in the cold and stood not too far away, making a series of shots of them--but I was rather expertly layered (if I do say so myself) in my warmest outer garments, so we can't compare... I even got as far as the library--and a couple of other places, too!

Aside from the intensity and unusual nature of the conversation between these two people, who are probably family members or have a close relationship, the fascinating thing about this shot for me are the various vestimentary codes visible here, notably in terms of what the young man is wearing. To start out, he is wearing a "non-standard" baseball cap. One sees LOTS of NY Yankees and NY Mets caps around town, as they are the two local major league teams. Other caps are popular, too, usually celebrating teams from nearby cities or that have recently won the World Series.

This young man, however, is wearing a cap from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Say what? The Pirates haven't won the World Series since 1979, years before this youth was born. It's a total mystery to me! Perhaps a family member is/was a fan... The second unusual thing for this very young man is his long braid. (He may have had two braids, but the other side of his face wasn't visible to me.) Long braids on men are not seen much these days He's wearing a hip-hop style head covering under his cap--quite age-appropriate, as the expression goes, but then he's wearing *very* fancy designer glasses--by Fendi, I believe. I don't quite know how they fit into his "look" or fashion statement, but they certainly add a unexpected nuance!
