So in the lower part of Prague, east of the river, the Prague Castle is always staring down at you from the western hillside. It's the origin of the city and we tried to make it up there on foot one day in the 18 degrees F weather. Little did we know there were these simple steps that lead you up from the base of the monument. Only upon our departure, after an hour of wandering and a cab ride to the top, did we realize this.
ToTW: Technique: I was taking pictures of the stars while relaxing in a hot tub.Then when I got bored of that I turned the tripod around jumped out of the hot tub and into the freezing night air. Did some quick stretches that highlight my fabulously toned and fit physique. I like how the steam looks coming off my body and the lighting so I kept it. And it was so cold that my footprints froze so I didn't feel like trying something else.
I then uploaded to GIMP and edited a large piece of my ass cheek that had come out of my swimsuit using the clone and heal tools. Mind you I didn't remove the ass I just edited it to appear to look as if it were covered by swimsuit.
If I were more talented I would have edited my bikini so that it matched.
I was going to use Picnik to add an attractive frame but decided against it because I try to pace myself and not do a border every day.
Went to Bowermans Nose with Barbara with a view to doing a star trail photo. It was so cold we lost all feeling in our hands and feet. It was so cold I lost the will to take photographs,so I settled for a long exposure instead.
Cold winter nights at the duck pond make me long for a long summer nights, and maybe a @madison_mallards game or two.

10 hours round trip drive to Central Oregon to check off another one of the “1000 places to go before you die” places. Crater Lake was definitely commando mosquitoes infested. At any point of time, there were more than 30 mosquitoes surrounding me and they totally bit through my hoodie.. Totally not exaggerating. They definitely had their fill of my sweet O+ blood for a couple hours. All that for the awesome milky way that made the sunrise after that seem ho hum. Was it worth it? I think so, because it was definitely one of the most magical moments of my life as so many shooting stars streaked across the velvet sky and the milky way spiraled its way in the vastness of the galaxy that I was looking at. One word to summarize it all: Surreal. On a side note, happy birthday Bro.

A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, for "beside the sun") is a common bright circular spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.
I know I was slack lately with comments and postings and I never envisaged that this year I will take winter photos like this one. I went for brief trip in Europe ( my mum passed away so needed to go ) and I take few shots in -15 degrees environment. It was challenge for me and my camera ( holding camera in freezing cold and without tripod ) but I managed to make few photos in freezing cold mornings. I hope you like this one.. It's freezing temperature, fingers went numb, can't even feel the controls, somehow managed to setup the tripod and took this long expo.
Here's Jazz, her owners are the one's we visited in the country. This is the look she gave when asked if she "needed" to go outside to well, you know......apparently the idea of a few minutes outdoors was not very appealing in -30 weather. Can't say I blame her!!
And to add to that depressing scenario......did any of you know that today has been granted the title, Blue Monday? Yup, January 17th has been given the honor of being the most depressing day of the year!

The build up to Christmas continues.
The fun for tonight was getting Maisie and Jack to wear almost everything they own so that they would be warm enough to head out for the Lantern Parade. This is where all of the local young school children make lanterns and, after a short carol service, parade down the road to the where the village christmas tree lights are turned on.
The highlight of the evening for Maisie though was when Father Christmas arrived on a spectacularly lit up sleigh. I was rather happy too as, even at ISO2500 and f/1.2, I finally managed to get my shutter speed up to something respectable!
We didn't hang around for long though as the wind had picked up and the icy rain was getting a bit much for us. So, straight home for some hot chocolate before bath and bed time.

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The extended Times Square area, also called the Theatre District, consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.
Still Autumn colours but definitely winter temperatures here in Hesketh Park. The lake froze over, four days before December began.
The Crescent Moon (with Earthshine) looks down on Comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) as it appears over the lighthouses and pier at Grand Haven State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan.
This comet was not visible without optical aid. 7x35 binoculars showed it, and just short exposures showed the fuzzball from space.
The comet was discovered in June 2011 using the Pan-STARRS telescope located near the summit of Haleakala, on the island of Maui in Hawaii. This visitor from the Oort cloud apparently has an orbital period of over 100,000 years (so if you don't see it now, you probably won't).
Note: This is the 48th comet I have observed in my lifetime. I've seen Earthshine more.
Note: It was cold with a biting wind off the lake. Even with appropriate clothing, we were frozen within an hour. I didn't get the feeling back in my fingers for 1/2 hour.
I love the way the icicles on my roof change shape as they thaw and refreeze! The tip of one resembles a dancing shoe! Trying to capture the natural sparkle and drips was tricky ... Waited for the sunlight to be just right!

The monster.
After a half day of shooting in the freezing cold, a sensible person would have curled up by the fire with a hot chocolate but we went back out with the new monster lens to test it out by the lake. And got so frozen... bleh. There weren't any birds really, so no output to show yet.

There are two different directions of camera design suiting for amateurs and professionals. Amateurs and professionals are two different breeds of people. Amateurs love light weight and small camera bodies and lenses. Professionals like solidly built, bulky, heavy, big cameras and big lenses. Professionals do use small compact cameras but they are treated as backup only.
As a result of this, the flagship or top of the line cameras in every camera brand are all big bulky ones.
Even though there is a trend to have large sensor in small bodies now, it is very unlikely to have a change for professional camera design and this is not a matter of technology constraints. Think about those even bigger medium format camera body and digital back costing tens of thousands dollars price tag! It is easier for camera-makers to justify the high price tag with a large camera may be?
This is the scene of two gulls sun bathing on ice at Minoru Park. The Arctic front comes to Vancouver area and many lakes in parks have been frozen into ice.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the United States, whose members regularly take polar bear plunges in the winters. The club was founded by famed health advocate Bernarr McFadden in 1903.
The club began using the event to raise funds for Special Olympics starting in 2005, and Camp Sunshine in 2007. In 2018, the club decided to support local groups and charities and began partnering with the Alliance for Coney Island to raise funds for local nonprofit organizations.
Members swim in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island, New York, United States every Sunday from November through April. Every New Year's Day, the Club is joined by participants from around the country, who partake in an annual swim. The 2005 event had 300 participants and 6000 onlookers. The Chief Polar Bear blows a conch shell to gather the swimmers before they run into the water.
The club was mentioned in popular culture. It is mentioned on the season three episode of Seinfeld, The Pez Dispenser In the episode Kramer informs Jerry that he has joined the club, claiming it to be 'invigorating'. It was also publicized on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in a taped segment by Dan Bakkedahl about the effects of global warming on the club in faux-nature documentary style.

Taking place on January 1, 2022, unlike past years the plunge will be an open swim, the beach will open starting at 11am and allow you to swim at any point until 2pm on the world famous Coney Island Beach. All funds raised help support our local non-profits and community by supporting a variety of initiatives including free public programming, environmental and educational programming, quality of life issues and more. With your help, we can help ensure that Coney Island continues to thrive!
No fee to participate but we encourage donations & fundraising for your plunge!
Registration begins at 10AM, we recommend that all plungers arrive no later than 12PM
Registration tables are located at Stillwell Avenue & the Boardwalk
All participants must sign a waiver on-site the day of the Plunge
Plungers under 18 years of age must have their parent or guardian present to sign the waiver the day of the Plunge.
Plunge as an individual, create a team, join a team or you can even help virtually!
Info about the Plunge:
There is no fee for plunging but donations are encouraged and you must register in order to participate. There is no donation minimum required to register online, You can register and pledge here, or on-site the morning of the plunge after 10:00am. All participants should arrive by 12PM to go through registration. If you are plunging as a group/team, all members must arrive together in order to ensure you all have the same plunge time. ALL participants whether pre-registered or registering the day of must go to the registration area to claim their wristbands with designated times to participate.
Bring warm clothes, surf boots or old sneakers, towels and definitely bring your camera! The NYC Parks Department provides changing facilities on the Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue.

Nine years after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy and throughout the 2019 Pandemic, the Coney Island neighborhood continues to recover. The Alliance for Coney Island is focused on ensuring residents have an improved quality of life through their supplemental services and workforce development programs.
With your help, the funds raised will support workforce development programs for local residents to connect them to job opportunities and neighborhood services, as well as help increase their advocacy for clean water and educate the public about waste.

Luna Park
Luna Park is the name of an amusement park in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City. Even the harshest winter weather is made bearable with a bit of sunshine! I am fascinated by waterfowl - how they can float around in the cold water all day and all night without freezing to death.
(Taken on Dec 25, 2010 just before midday.) I hope my greetings convey a little of the spirit of Christmas. I had certainly had a glass or two of Christmas spirit before I changed into what I thought was a rather fetching Christmas outfit. I was feeling pretty glamorous ....... until someone remarked that I looked rather like their Christmas turkey !
Anyway, every Christmas I join the 'swimmers' on the beach for our annual charity dip in aid of the NI Hospice. We go in, whatever the weather, but 2010 has to be my favourite because we had both snow and sun.
I wish you all the very best for 2014 and hope that Flickr allows us to continue our virtual friendships - I'm getting my greetings in early as you just never know what is round the corner, on Flickr and of course in real life.

At approx 3pm this afternoon (30th November 2017) the ice on Hesketh Park's lake was already spreading apace.
Horton Plains is situated to the south of Nuwara Eliya. This plain is a unique ecological zone of wet patana grassland with a cloud forest and is home to unique and endemic wildlife. This coldest and windiest location in Sri Lanka consists of ecosystems such as Montane evergreen forests, grasslands, marshy lands and aquatic ecosystem. At an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level, Horton Plains spreads across over 3,169 hectares of the highest tableland of the island. In view of the large number of endemic flora and fauna species, Horton Plains was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 30th July 2010. The Horton Plains National Park offers amazing hikes amongst the shadows of Sri Lanka’s second and third-highest mountains; Kirigalpotta (2395m) and Totupola (2359m), each of which rear up from the edges of the plateau. If you want to camp here there are 3 campsites available for booking. Chimney Pool area is one of the most beautiful parts of the Horton Plain according to our experience. That could be one of the reasons for the Battaramulla Wild Life Department to allow to build campsites around Chimney Pool. To book Camping sites you have to visit Battaramulla Wild Life Department or you can call this number for booking 0112888585. Annual temperature of Horton plains is around 12-13 °C. But this could be decrease to 5 °C or even less. So if you are not comfortable with harsh & cold weather conditions I do not recommend camping here(not recomended for beginners). Specially around 3.00 am to 7.00 am temperature can be drop to minimum. If you plan to stay make sure to take some warm clothes, jackets,bed sheets or a good sleeping bag. Also you have to agree to the strict rules of Wild Life Department( no camp fire,no alcohol etc) Last but not least please clean your camping site before you leave and take every thing with you.
