A lovely morning but very cold, especially in the wind. The temperature had only risen to -3.5 centigrade when I went back home.

The Times Square Ball is a time ball located atop the One Times Square building in New York City, primarily utilized as part of New Year's Eve celebrations held in Times Square. Yearly at 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31, the ball is lowered 77 feet (23 m) down a specially designed flagpole, resting on the midnight to signal the start of the new year. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, and has been held annually since (except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts). The ball's design has also been updated over the years to reflect new advances in technologies—its original design utilized 100 incandescent light bulbs, iron, and wood in its construction, while its current incarnation features a computerized LED lighting system and an outer surface consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels. As of 2009, the ball is also displayed atop One Times Square year-round and is removed only for general maintenance.
The Times Square ball drop is one of the best-known New Year's celebrations internationally, attended by at least one million spectators yearly, with an estimated global audience of at least 1 billion. The prevalence of the Times Square ball drop has also inspired other similar "drops" held locally in other cities and towns around the world.

I snapped this shot just as this female Finch was starting to stretch her wings. She was already fluffed up because of the severe cold weather we were experiencing, but when she started to stretch she went into super fluff mode for just a few moments.
I didn't notice the other little Finch in the background until I looked at the shots later. They were waiting their turn at the feeders which were teeming with all kinds of birds.
Everything is laid out and ready to go. Running a marathon can become quite ritualistic - I'll admit that!
Ringo did NOT run the race but he certainly could have if he were allowed. He ran all my training runs with me - including three twenty milers and a weekend of three consecutive twelve milers. Plus he ran all Margo's training runs (Margo and I generally do not run together because of schedule differences) so he was in better shape that both of us put together.
Freezing cold in Montreal, with strong winds blowing since yesterday. Part of the LaSalle road crew trying to keep the sidewalks clear. Heard it might rain Sunday.
Lunar Eclipse photo shoot.
Met up with several other Sacramento Flickr Photographers just after 5:30 am, on top of a 8 floor parking structure, just east of California's State Capital.
Although the Eclipsing Moon was in and out of some mid level clouds, we were all able to get a few shots worth posting. Temp's were pretty chilly while there, starting at about 29 degrees F, but once the sun started to come up, the temps also started to rise

I met up with Vanessa while she was in town, and she is adorable, and sweet, and silly... Needless to say, we had fun! Here she is practicing her serious face.
I took my camera for a brief walk this evening even though it was pouring rain. These benches looked so intense against the soft red of the bushes

El Primarca Vulkan fue el hijo más compasivo del Emperador y Erda la Perpetua, su noble naturaleza era contraria al de un general y conquistador que fundamentaba su poder en el vacío mundano, al igual que sus 20 hermanos él bebe Vulkan fue separado de la incubadora y dispersado por la galaxia como última medida de una desesperada “Erda” por cambiar el destino de su sensible hijo. (Desde su nacimiento tendría una habilidad oculta que había heredado de sus dos padres inmortales.)
El pequeño Primarca descendió en su capsula como un cometa incandescente sobre un lejano planeta volcánico y primitivo llamado “Nocturne”, desde la distancia un herrero humano llamado “N'bel” siguió el rastro del misterioso cometa hasta encontrar al bebe en su interior, sorprendido por la coincidencia profetizada de un salvador Prometeico que caería del cielo el herrero “N'bel” adopto al niño como su propio hijo y lo llamo “Vulkan” como señal de una profecía cumplida.
El Pequeño Vulkan creció rápidamente absorbiendo los conocimientos y la cultura estoica de su padre adoptivo quien le instruyo sobre las artes metalúrgicas de Nocturne y sus secretos filosóficos; Trabajando en secreto en la forja de su padre y cazando los grandes saurios el joven Vulkan se convertiría en un gran hombre de sabiduría y fuerza justo como el yunque y el martillo que transforman los metales. (Su entrenamiento secreto junto a su padre adoptivo había concluido y el fuego de la batalla seria su nuevo elemento.) 🔥
Preparado para enfrentarlas las dificultades del exterior y armado con sus dos martillos cruzados sobre sus hombros el joven Vulkan desafío una invasión de “Eldars Oscuros” que hostigaba a las poblaciones vecinas cada cuatro años, los Elfos degenerados capturaban a los humanos de Nocturne para torturarlos hasta la muerte en sus rituales sádicos por tal motivo los habitantes humanos vivía bajo un régimen de terror y tristeza constante ante los repentinos raptos de los Eldars pero la aparición de Vulkan cambio la situación.
Reconfortados por el valor del joven Vulkan las aldeas humanas se defendieron de los incursores Eldars dando comienzo a una batalla legendaria por su libertad donde el joven Primarca les aseguro una victoria con cien elfos oscuros asesinados por sus martillos, sorprendidos por su salvador nacido del fuego los habitantes nocturneanos juraron ante Vulkan nunca volver a esconderse de sus enemigos. (Reconociendo su liderazgo.)
Bajo una gran celebración por la Victoria las aldeas de Nocturne realizaron un torneo de resistencia y artesanía, durante la apertura apareció un extraño de piel pálida algo diferente en comparación con la población morena de los nocturneanos, bajo un traje extravagante el extraño pidió competir asegurando que nadie podría vencerlo provocando las risas por su insolencia; El mismo Vulkan acepto el desafío del extraño pretencioso. 😎
Los pobladores de Nocturne fueron testigos de impresionantes desafíos de fuerza y resistencia sobrehumana cuando ambos contrincantes empataron en todas las pruebas con el mayor tiempo de actividad sin ningún descanso, al finalizar el día los jueces determinaron un último desafío para desempatar; Con tiempo medido ambos concursantes debería fabricar un arma en menos de 24 horas y cazar un gigantesco reptil llamado dragón Salamandra, el concursante que obtuviera al reptil más grande seria el ganador.
Determinado por ganar el joven Vulkan forjo sin descanso en un día y medio un gran martillo y el extraño una espada afilada, ambos contrincantes fueron guiados hacia un gran volcán activo donde habitaban los dragones Salamandra más grandes y resistentes al fuego; La cacería favoreció al joven Primarca quien encontró primero un ejemplar gigante que venció con un golpe de su martillo, regresando triunfante llevando su premio el volcán hizo erupción arrojando al joven Primarca al borde de un precipicio de magma donde sostuvo con una mano su vida y con la otra la cola de su presa, aguantando por varias horas sin poder decidirse hasta que apareció el extraño pálido quien arrojo al rio de lava un colosal dragón salamandra para utilizarlo como puente y poder salvar la vida de Vulkan. 🌋
Regresando a la aldea Vulkan fue proclamado vencedor al traer su presa intacta pero la victoria la recibió con silencio porque había entendido que el extraño pálido había renunciado al desafío por salvarlo, conectando con la gran lección de humildad para proteger una vida por encima del orgullo el joven Vulkan se arrodillo ante el extraño pálido quien asombrado ante la vista de los aldeanos se despojó de su disfraz para revelarse como el “Emperador” padre e hijo se había reencontrado.
Reincorporándose a la Gran Cruzada Galáctica el joven Vulkan acepto unirse al Imperio de su Padre al comprender que muchos otros mundos aterrorizados le necesitaban y su mundo adoptivo Nocturne y su gente no estarían solos en su ausencia por que sus 3000 hijos genéticos “los Salamandras” La Decimoctava legión de Astartes había decidido quedarse para aprender sobre los secretos de la forja junto a los sacrificios personales que debían asumir por la defensa de las poblaciones humanas.
Por último la frase del señor de los Dragones:
"Está en nuestra naturaleza crear cosas que nos sobrevivirán. Entonces nos esforzamos, creamos, construimos, fabricamos, luchamos y no cedemos. Porque dentro de cada frágil cuerpo humano nace la voluntad de asir las estrellas y abrir un sendero hasta la misma eternidad."

The crescent Moon along with the planet Jupiter hang in the western sky on a cold evening in March. The farmland below is quiet, and perhaps not aware of the celestial spectacle going on over their heads.
(Note: This is where I shot the setting Moon a few weeks ago and got some frostbitten hands. Guess what? Got frostbit again tonight. Stupid cold weather.)

Horton Plains is situated to the south of Nuwara Eliya. This plain is a unique ecological zone of wet patana grassland with a cloud forest and is home to unique and endemic wildlife. This coldest and windiest location in Sri Lanka consists of ecosystems such as Montane evergreen forests, grasslands, marshy lands and aquatic ecosystem. At an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level, Horton Plains spreads across over 3,169 hectares of the highest tableland of the island. In view of the large number of endemic flora and fauna species, Horton Plains was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 30th July 2010. The Horton Plains National Park offers amazing hikes amongst the shadows of Sri Lanka’s second and third-highest mountains; Kirigalpotta (2395m) and Totupola (2359m), each of which rear up from the edges of the plateau. If you want to camp here there are 3 campsites available for booking. Chimney Pool area is one of the most beautiful parts of the Horton Plain according to our experience. That could be one of the reasons for the Battaramulla Wild Life Department to allow to build campsites around Chimney Pool. To book Camping sites you have to visit Battaramulla Wild Life Department or you can call this number for booking 0112888585. Annual temperature of Horton plains is around 12-13 °C. But this could be decrease to 5 °C or even less. So if you are not comfortable with harsh & cold weather conditions I do not recommend camping here(not recomended for beginners). Specially around 3.00 am to 7.00 am temperature can be drop to minimum. If you plan to stay make sure to take some warm clothes, jackets,bed sheets or a good sleeping bag. Also you have to agree to the strict rules of Wild Life Department( no camp fire,no alcohol etc) Last but not least please clean your camping site before you leave and take every thing with you.

A stately procession with many more baby deer than I was able to photograph at once. I began to wonder why the adults were so few - had they been on the table in Copenhagen's rich suburbs?
