In this cartoon, Heston probably had a few reference points in mind regarding the title. One could be the phrase "God moves in mysterious ways,", or, if referring to William Cowper's 1773 hymn, "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," along with Galileo purportedly saying "still it [the earth] moves" after released briefly from house arrest for having blasphemed against Church doctrine by saying that the earth revolves around the sun. For Heston, the "world" is the world of reason, a large rolling sphere being levered forward by a work-gang of rationalists and crushing the superstitions unable to resist its weight or authority. Note that the technologies of the age (balloons, trains, ships) are all on the side of reason and that the part of the picture most filled with light is that inhabited by the freethinkers.

The hilarious jury-rigged balloon, pasted together from the tattered remnants of outworn theologies, can hardly stay inflated by the outgassing of brimstone and hot air. The usual culprits are there: Talmage, Beecher, the Pope. This rickety old thinking is going to go nowhere.
