Psychedelic poster (1968)
By Joe E McHugh
In the 1960s, the American artist Joseph McHugh founded a hughely inventive poster design company in San Francisco called East Totem West. Their distinct kaleidoscopic style appealed to the growing generation of hippies and freethinkers, but more than this, the company's artists reinvented the poster as an artform. Carroll's floating Cheshire Cat and disappearing White Rabbit provided the perfect subject matter for their work.

(2007) Local stuff of interest to secular humanists in the Greater Houston, TX area. I'm a member of Humanists of Houston and Houston Church of Freethought.
I've heard it suggested that advanced civilisation did not arise in sub-Saharan Africa because you can't saddle a rhinoceros and ride it into battle.
I've also heard it claimed that faith itself, the irrational belief in stuff you have no evidence for, is a little like a rhino: it will do nothing in the way of real work for you, and yet up close and personal it makes spectacular demands on your attention.
Why on earth am I talking about rhinoceroses and faith? Well it's simple really; I'm reading a fascinating book called 'The End of Faith' and they mention the rhino metaphor in it, and, in the true spirit of Paris, I just had to go, seek and shoot one for myself in my capital of predilection, didn't I? You know me. Handy with a lens hood and a dab hand at liturgical heresy. I couldn't resist. For more irreverence, go here. For less irreverence, don't.
Nearby you'll find an irate nelly, a posing horse and a whole bunch of other statues - have you guessed where it is yet? In front of the Musée d'Orsay, parbleu!
What can't you find in Paris? That, is the question.

Small groups of religious counter-protesters appeared at the edges of the Reason Rally, getting attention from the more militant types.
Don't ask me why Manny Pacquiao is spelled wrong, I was too distracted by that colon to notice. I didn't notice the "world greatest boxer" either. *facepalm*
The outer fabric is rich upholstery weight brocade in cielo blue, café au lait and espresso browns. (Can you tell that I am trying to cut down on coffee?) There is a bit of ecru as well. Elegant medallions, fleur de lis, and leafy scrolls.
The lining material is a map of the world drawn in ecru on milk chocolate brown.
It measures H 14 in x L 13½ in (36 cm x L 34 cm). The straps measure 26 in (66cm).

Campo de Fiori, being a pagan and carnal place, was believed suitable for executions. Giordano Bruno was the most important figure to be burnt at the stake there. His crime? He was condemned as a 'freethinker' because he had the audacity to question the orthodoxy that the earth was the centre of the universe. Contending that the earth revolved around the sun cost him his life.
