“A believer is a bird in a cage, a freethinker is an eagle parting the clouds with tireless wing”

"The progress of humanity seems to have come to a halt, and you with your superior intelligence will know why. The reason is that the world lacks a nation which possesses true leadership. Such leadership, of course, is required not to dominate other peoples, but to lead them along the path of duty, to lead them toward the brotherhood of nations where all the barriers erected by egoism will be destroyed. We need the kind of leadership which, in the true tradition of medieval chivalry, would devote itself to redressing wrongs, supporting the weak, sacrificing momentary gains and material advantage for the much finer and more satisfying achievement of relieving the suffering of our fellow men. We need a nation courageous enough to give us a lead in this direction. It would rally to its cause all those who are suffering wrong or who aspire to a better life, and all those who are now enduring foreign oppression.”

Part of a letter written by Giuseppe Garibaldi to Karl Blind on 10 April 1865. Garibaldi supported the creation of a European federation. Many Europeans expected a unified Germany to become a European and world leader and to champion humanitarian policies. If only their vision had come to pass.

Is there a world statesman to take on this mantle? Not Trump, not America, not now….

Giuseppe Garibaldi was my childhood hero. He was man of the people, a truly honest man who asked little for himself. He was one of the architects of Italian freedom from the Austrian Empire and Italy’s unification. So admired abroad was Garibaldi that in July 1861 U.S. President Abraham Lincoln offered him a Union command in the American Civil War [the offer was declined].

He was one of the great masters of guerrilla warfare and yet towards the end of his life he became something of a pacifist, for his own experience had taught him that wars were seldom either righteous or effective in achieving their ends. Garibaldi was recognized as a champion of the rights of labour and of women’s emancipation, and he showed himself to be a religious freethinker and ahead of his time in believing in racial equality and the abolition of capital punishment.

This rucksack is very youthful (which as we all know has nothing to with years, months or days).

It is cool watery blue with a sketch of a sparrow on a branch. There are plump blossoms and foliage in young colors. (It is blue sketchbook from Anna Maria Horner's drawing room collection.)

The lining is a Japanese fabric. Delicate white lace on a young grey green background.

It measures L 13½ in x H 14 in (L 34 cm x H 36 cm). The straps measure 27 in (69 cm).

Your refrigerator is just dying for some new magnets, and these three purple ones are just perfect! Two of these are a darker purple, and one is a lighter lavender.

These magnets are approximately 1" by 1 1/4" in size.

I use the same techniques for magnets as I do for my fused glass jewelry, but magnets usually only go in the kiln once and usually only consist of one piece of glass. Each piece is ground smooth on the back and sides. Then, I attach a super strong magnet on the back of each. I hate it when magnets don't stick to the fridge, and so I guarantee, these will stay attached!

The San Diego Coalition of Reason (San Diego CoR) is a collection of local organizations working together to increase awareness of secular-minded groups throughout the San Diego area.

All San Diego CoR organizations share common ground -- promoting wider acceptance of a more rational and realistic view of the universe -- but each has its own particular emphasis. Some advocate for scientific knowledge, reason, and skeptical inquiry. Some focus on the promotion of dogma-free humanist ethics, and an appreciation for human experience and culture. Others focus more on organizing social events and nurturing interpersonal relationships within the secular community.

While our collective viewpoint is secular, we share commonalities with many belief systems, including religious beliefs. We are committed to a more compassionate world; we are working for a more reasonable citizenry and a higher level of discourse; we are striving to increase the quality of life for all; and we find fellowship an integral part of a rewarding and fulfilling human experience.

San Diego CoR endeavors to inform San Diegans that there is a community of people who share a rational basis for their worldviews, who attend intellectual lectures, enjoy philosophical discussions, and love to gather for fun and entertainment. We invite you to visit the websites of all our member organizations, and to contact any of those that interest you!
