There is nothing new about Old News
"There are 4,000 holes in the road in Blackburn, Lancashire, or one twenty-sixth of a hole per person, according to a council survey. If Blackburn is typical, there are two million holes in Britains roads, and 300,000 in London".
This was what John Lennon read in Daily Mails Far and Near column on 17 January 1967. Lennon transformed the news into the last verse of the song A Day In A Life, the last song on The Beatles 1967 album Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Reading about the 4,000 potholes in Blackburn, Lancashire, may start you thinking about the flood of information that is constantly printed and possibly read by millions of people around the globe. You may begin to think about the amount of information that is accessible to an individual. Read, unread, understood, misunderstood.
Old News is a project about information and media.
In Old News you will find images and articles selected by 24 individuals. It could have been 24 farmers, dental technicians or real estate agents choosing the articles and images, but the information in Old News was selected by artists. Starting in January 2004, I invited one artist a month and continued to do so for twelve months. Each invited artist was asked to invite a fellow artist to participate and both clipped four articles or images (possibly one every week) from news sources s/he read during the designated month. All articles appear, as they were sent to me. Some have been reduced in size, due to the size of the original clipping, but otherwise they have not been edited. A few artists have culled their articles and images from webnews sources, some have re-worked them graphically, and that is how they are shown here.
It is still true that the media now form an integral part of reality effects by creating a media-oriented vision of reality that contributes to creating the reality it claims to describe. When I first started thinking about Old News, I thought about how news, newspapers and information influence my life. How I select my news sources and how information can be manipulated in the media. I thought of how I would react to my own Old News request. Would I read and look at the daily paper differently? While you read this, you might think about what you would do.
I was curious how 24 artists would react to my request and make their selections. The artists approached the Old News project in a variety of ways. Besides the 24 artists clipping articles, I asked the artists John Miller and Joachim Koester to write short essays for the cover of the premiere issue of Old News.
News and newspapers have been used in many different creative processes long before Lennon discovered the 4,000 holes. Recycling news articles, headlines, images and using information from the print media were at the core of visual art in the 20th century. The expressions are many and varied from intervention, incorporation, appropriation, reproduction of news to self published newspapers and montaged newspaper fragments.
Many artists, writers and musicians have inspired me in my research. I would like to mention Sylvan Hoffman and C. Hartley Grattan's book News of the World, a History of the World in Newspaper-style (1953), On Kawaras I read (1966 to the present), the news paper insert in Dead Kennedy's album Bedtime for Democracy (1986), Tom Lehrer's That Was The Year That Was (1965), Ken Loach's segment from the film September 11 and Guy Schraenen's exhibition Kunstzeitung/Zeitungskunst about the history of artworks in and around newspapers. I looked for, but regrettably never found, Aleksandr Mosolov's Four Newspaper Advertisements (Chetyre gazetnyh obyavlenya) a 1926 composition inspired by real advertisements in the Russian newspaper Izvestija.
This is the first issue of Old News. There are more to come. The Old News project will also be presented at different exhibition venues and take on many different shapes and forms.

This is a concept that I have had for a while that finally got to see the light of day. I updated it from an older version. I added floral elements and paint splats to depict both the beauty and the mess that relationships can be. Back when I did client work, I would describe myself as a pinch-hitter — someone who filled in temporarily to complement an in-house team. From the looks of this letter, I like to think he might have described himself the same way.

"Nothing will ever match leading those men in a combat situation. It had a lot of elements. It was tragic, at times it was traumatic. At the same time, it was very exciting. I mean, you go into a hot LZ (landing zone) and you see the sniper fire coming from the hedgerows…it's kind of like what you see in the movies…it's certainly an adrenaline rush."
That is how Vietnam War veteran Ron Beedy describes his time in the war. Beedy was drafted in July 1965 and spent 18 months as an enlisted man before attending Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation from OCS and receiving a commission as a 2nd Lt., Beedy was assigned to the 29th Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
From there, Beedy went to the 25th Infantry Division where he served in Vietnam from May 1967 to May 1968. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, A Company.

BATTLE OF THE HORSE SHOE as told by Beedy
It was a battalion-sized operation that was hastily put together. They had intelligence that there was an enemy concentration on the horseshoe bend of the Saigon River. They prepped it the day before.
By prepping, I mean artillery, air strikes and more. They dropped more ordnance than you could believe in there. But we grunts knew that it never quite did the job. We went in there in the morning. There were four companies in the battalion. My company, A Company, was the lead company.
What struck me was the water. The Saigon River is tidal for quite a way and apparently, the tide was in. The rice paddies were filled with water. It looked like a big lake down there. They (the enemy) were dug in along the rice paddy dikes; there were even some concrete bunkers down there. What we were on was a BDA, a bomb damage assessment (mission).
It was hot from the beginning, choppers were getting hit. We knew it was a hot LZ, we saw the tracers. Anyway, we jumped off in to the mud. We had mud up to our knees and water up to our thighs. The mud just sucked you in there.
There were blips of water where the bullets were hitting and some guys were getting hit. During my six months as a platoon leader, I was the only lieutenant who didn't get hit or killed, so you're looking at a lucky man, absolutely.
We were pinned down. We slithered like alligators through the water and got behind the rice paddy dikes. It saved our lives. We took a lot of casualties and we're trying to get them dusted off. Finally, we had to do something.
We called in artillery. Our (artillery) base was in line with us so we walked the rounds in. They (the enemy) had bunkers in the bamboo clumps about 30 or 40 yards (away). We were getting artillery so close, we had shrapnel coming down on us.
We had air strikes that day. I don't know how many. I'll never forget looking up and seeing those bombs hurtling through the air. We could read the numbers on the plane and wave to the pilots.
We were there for the whole day in that little area…we were hunkered down behind the dikes. We tried to return fire but our weapons kept jamming. I got my M-16 stuck in the mud and it jammed.
Sometime in the afternoon, the company commander radioed me to take whoever was near and assault the tree line. That was probably the most ominous order I'd ever received in the war. I didn't know where my second and third squads were. The choppers coming in on a hot LZ got mixed up…I never saw my second or third squad all day.
But, I did have first squad with me. So there were four to five of us. We worked our way down one paddy to a dike where we could run along it. We got to another paddy where we got down and chucked a couple of grenades. And I looked to my right, and by God the whole company was on line…it was like a Civil War charge.

The battle continued for the rest of the day. The enemy fire was so fierce as to make extraction of the wounded by helicopter difficult.
Beedy survived that day and many more in Vietnam unscathed. He returned stateside after his tour was completed where he was assigned as an advisor to an Army Reserve unit. He returned to civilian life where he finished college at the University of Maine at Farmington, and married Barbara, herself a UMF student at the time. They raised three sons while pursuing careers in education.
For his actions during the Battle of the Horseshoe, Beedy was awarded the Bronze Star with V device for valor. He remains active with the members of his former division, attending reunions and communicating via e-mail. The reunions, he says, are filled with "cheers, beers and a few tears."
Today, Beedy's awards and decorations occupy a display case in his dining room. The Bronze Star medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the blue shoulder cord designating him as an infantryman stand as a silent reminder of that time 40 years ago.

Nhưng may thay, tôi đã có toán đầu tiên với tôi. Vì vậy, có 5 người trong chúng tôi. Beedy sống sót ngày hôm đó và nhiều ngày nữa tại Việt Nam và không bị thương tích. gì cả. Ông trở lại Mỹ sau khi thời hạn quân dịch của ông được chấm dứt. Sau nầy ông được bổ nhiệm làm cố vấn cho một đơn vị quân đội Reserve. Ông trở lại cuộc sống dân sự, nơi ông tốt nghiệp là Đại học Maine tại Farmington, ông kết hôn với Barbara, một sinh viên UMF. Họ có ba con trai theo đuổi sự nghiệp trong lĩnh vực giáo dục.
Đối với các hành động can đãm của mình trong trận chiến của Horseshoe, Beedy đã được trao giải Ngôi sao đồng với V dũng cảm. 2. Horseshoe Battle in 1967..(.lots of dead fish floated down river. I remember thunderous sound for few days.)..was not much known to the Ben The people. (The sharp bend at the mouth of the Thi Tinh River). In those years (1960s) no one allowed wandering out there, my family's farm at Rach Moc was left unused for years, also all the bridges from Binh Duong to Ben The were damaged.
3.One of my villagers was accused of informant to US copter pilot when he was fishing at the river bank near the Horse –Shoe area: He erected a tall bamboo stick to be anchored for his fish hooks strings. Later, he went missing no where can be found. If you were suspected working for CIA...you will be missing!
4. Saigon is 30 km in the Southeast. and Binh Duong Market is 5 km down via SE expressway (QL 13).
5. Lots of families at Ben The have friends or relatives living in America, Canada, or French. Some families are French citizen, but they have left.
Hints: -There is no "911" for your medical emergency in country side.

My wife and my youngest son recently got back from three weeks in the UK. Apart from being pretty busy while the wife was away, I had a few busy weeks of work too. Juggling freelance life with being full-time dad, laundry, cook etc has been a lot of fun but hard work.
There were a few days when the kids drove me mad. One day last week in particular Joe and Ami were arguing like mad so I just finished what work I had to do at home, phoned the rental car place and we disappeared out of town for the whole day.
Turned out to be a great day to go to Kamakura beach as even the guy who runs one of the bars at the beach's north end said that he hadn't seen a prettier sunset in a long time.
Here's a few shots from the day. A few of the kids and a couple of the surfers and paddle boarders with the sunset and Mt. Fuji....
