Martin & Frances's second show & tell item was this early 20thC push fit which bears all the hallmarks of a jigsaw manufactured by Peacock as contractors - a red mock croc box, side label 'The Great Picture Puzzle Craze' and red box seals, and a typical smooth Peacock cut.

CE Clifford & Co Ltd (Fine Art Publishers, 12 Bury St, St James' London, Tel no 1210 Mayfair) 110pc no 2 Obstinacy, 10x8in.

The image shows a recalcitrant donkey, laden with produce and ducks in its side panniers, stopped across train tracks resisting the girl's efforts to get it clear in the face of an oncoming train.

The National Gallery website gives information about the firm CE Clifford, whose founder was descended from sculptor John Charles Felix Rossi (grandfather), and grocer/oilman father.

It announced a sale on the premises at no.30 of the remaining stock of engravings, etchings and photogravures and also of the shop fittings. C.E. PEP Magni was a bike shop located in Baggio, Italy, and owned by Peppino

Magni, the former mechanic of the Italian Professional Team (Fiorenzo

Magni, the great "third man of Italian cycling," was a member of this

Peppino Magni during the period 1975-1980 by Giovanni Losa in Vittuone.

Losa is a very respected framemaker who produced bikes under his own name

and for others including Cinelli. Although Mr. Losa's firm still exists,

he suffered a stroke two years ago and, sadly, is no longer active.

According to Mr. Granzotto, the "top of the line" PEP Magni" framesets

Well, I motored down to Greensboro to see my old boss John Fisher and pick up some frames from my framemaker, strong-gripped ninety-years-old Henry Kendall. We had some time to kill before we went over to the church (John's trying to make a Baptist out of me) so we checked out a few antique stores. These are (some of) what I found. Two are English, three are from North Carolina, and one, unidentified, but it sure looks more Tarheel than Brit.

Another part of the Bronx Zoo that I was very fond of is the Butterfly Garden. Butterflies are colorful and delicate, they are very nice to photograph. Outside captivity, they are hard to catch, let alone find one with very nice colors.

I found out that it wasn't as easy as it seems to capture these beauties. You have to find the right angle to make sure everything, the wings in particular, remain in focus. Even at f/8, 200mm, the depth of field was so narrow, you need to stay parallel to their wings.

This was indoors with, again, very limited light. Handheld, VR on, 200mm at f/5. I would have opted for f/8 but settled on f/5 because of the slow shutter speed even at ISO 800! I didn't want to bump ISO to 1600 or else I would lose the intricate details on the wings.

What would have saved me is if I had a flash with me. Unfortuately, in my quest to lighten up my load, I left an important tool that I should always have with me.. my SB-600 flash! There were couple of times where it would have been beneficial.

I surely learned a lot from this trip. I had a long list of difficulties but overall, it turned out fine. If I can get about 10 good shots out of a thousand, that is very fine with me.

My philosophy is, pick the best, then throw out the rest. I know digital made it easy for us to take millions of pictures but what counts are the very few worth keeping. Let's keep quality alive people, and strive for the best!

A present for friends getting married. Printed in A3 and had it framed at a framemaker´s shop, which came out much better than expected.

Here is the finished frame laying on our living room rug.

We have an antique persian in the living room. I've been photographing finished frames on it lately. I think the antique character compliments the frames well, but it might be too busy. What do you think?

If you went through the whole series, I hope you enjoyed my little primer on frame making. I'll try to put more of these together with the other sorts of frames I make. My great love is hand carved, water-gilded frames using real gold leaf. That is a much more involved process, and hence much more costly. I also make frames with hand-tooled and dyed leather, and fine hard-wood frames (oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany, etc) with intricate joinery and finishes.

I finally met Danitello in person! She was kind enough to give me some books to boost my knowledge about birds. I am sorry, Dani, if we didn't stay long. Maybe we can meet again at CMB?

Tina and I met her at Richter's Orchard by Pulaski Road. I pass by that road almost everyday and I always wondered what the orchard looks like! Thanks To Dani, I finally saw it! Wow, those rows of apple trees! That rusted tractor by the wooden fence! It was a very overcast day with dramatic clouds overhead and it was getting dark but I couldn't help myself not to snap a few pictures.

The resulting shot looked lifeless due to the extreme overcast and when I increased the brightness, the sky got blown out! I needed to maintain that sky and falling light to express the scene I saw at that moment. This split toned image is the only way I was able to express what I saw.

Before we left, we heard a hawk screech and saw it soar in the distance, leaving a smile on our faces.
